Klay Thompson Nets 40 For Second Straight Game As Warriors Top Sixers 117-105

For the first time in his career Klay Thompson scored 40 points in consecutive games.  After netting 40 points against the Mavericks on March 25, the 6’7 shooting guard replicated the feat on Sunday, bringing his two game total to 80 points. Going with those 80 points is one assist.  One, in two games.

“I was telling my teammates: ‘Can you get me one assist? Just catch it and shoot it,’ ” said Thompson, after not recording an assists against Philadelphia. “They were killing me after the game the last two games — ’80 points, one assist, I don’t know if that’s ever been done.’ Law of averages, it’ll balance out.”

In the Warriors’ victory on Sunday, number 66 on the season, Thompson shot 15-27 and knocked down half of his 14 three point attempts as Golden State continues to march towards the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ record of 72 wins in a season.  The Warriors are currently one game ahead of the pace of Michael Jordan‘s squad from two decades ago.

Thompson’s recent hot streak has allowed to shine bright after being overshadowed by his fellow Splash Brother, Steph Curry and forward Draymond Green, who many feel has supplanted Thompson as the second best player on the team.

Curry scored 33 points in the win over Dallas and 20 against Philadelphia.  He shot 7-21 from deep compared to Thompson’s 16-30.

Green has continued to deliver excellent all-around play.  The versatile Michigan State product combined for 32 points, 18 rebounds, and 21 assists in the two victories, including a triple-double on Sunday.  Green’s 12 triple-doubles on the season are second in the league behind Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook, who has 16 and continues to scorch the league on a nightly basis.

Thompson has also said he wants to make a run at Curry’s old NBA record of 286 3s in a season.  Curry has blown past that mark this season, with 350 made from downtown with 9 games remaining, Curry is the only player in NBA history with 300 made 3s in a season.  Thompson is currently at 253 for the season.

“It would be cool to break Steph’s old record because this man is doing things that have never been done before,” Thompson said. “If we both got 300 in one season, that would be incredibly special.”

The Warriors’ (66-7) quest to repeat as champions resumes tonight at 10:30 PM EST when they host the Washington Wizards (36-37).  With a 4.5 game lead over San Antonio in the race for the top seed in the Western Conference, and the Spurs seemingly content with second place (They rested all five starters in an 111-92 loss to OKC on Saturday), the Dubs look to control their own destiny in their pursuit of NBA history.
