In October 2008, pro golfer John Daly was taken into custody in North Carolina because he was intoxicated and uncooperative with law enforcement outside of a Hooters.
Daly was never officially charged or arrested, but he spent 24 hours in Forsyth County Jail so he could get sober. Daly went into detail regarding this situation, mentioning that he had a few drinks and told his friends that he was going to sleep on his bus. Daily said he was known for sleeping with his eyes open, but his bus driver was unaware and called 911 because he thought Daly was dead.

Even though there was no legal action taken, the PGA suspended Daly for six months, fined him $10,000 and required him to attend an inpatient alcohol treatment program.

Daly is a highly successful golfer who many fans love due to his bold personality and his ability to drive the ball a long distance, which earned him the nickname “Long John.” He became the first golfer on the PGA Tour to average over 300 yards on his drives throughout a season.
In Daly’s professional career, he has 19 wins, including five on the PGA Tour. Two of his five wins on the PGA Tour are Major Championships, as he won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship. At the age of 59, Daly still competes on the PGA Tour Champions.
John Daly’s son, John Daly II, currently golfs at the University of Arkansas, which is his father’s alma mater.
