The NFL schedule has been released and with that, it means that fans can start buying tickets for the 2020 season. Over the course of the next few weeks, we here at uSports will be dissecting the regular season schedules of each of the NFL teams, and tell you what games you are going to want to attend.

The Houston Texans last season had a very strong season going 10-6, winning the AFC South and they had a lead in the Divisional Round against the Kansas City Chiefs, and if it wasn’t for the poor play calling by head coach Bill O’Brien, the Texans might have made the AFC Championship Game. 2020 will be a rough year for the Texans in my opinion. They traded away Deasuan Watson’s favorite receiver in Deandre Hopkins and in my opinion, got pennies on the dollar for him, getting an injury-prone David Johnson and two draft picks in return, the one from this year resulted in Ross Blacklock who might not even be a starter for the Texans in 2020. They now also have two injury prone wide receivers for Watson to throw to in Will Fuller and Brandin Cooks as well as Kenny Stills and Randall Cobb. I wouldn’t be surprised if Watson wants out of Houston soon. Their offensive line is not terrible with the now highest-paid offensive lineman in football in Laremy Tunsil. Their defense has some questions. JJ Watt is still there but who knows what his health situation is looking like, Whitney Merrcillus and Benardrick McKinney are solid but not elite, their secondary is patchwork at best. Despite having a top quarterback in Watson and guys around him when healthy have shown the ability to perform, I don’t see them winning a lot of games because of their defense.

Looking at the Texans schedule for 2020, they open up with some really tough games prior to their bye, playing the Chiefs and Ravens in the first two weeks of the season. They will also play the Steelers, Vikings, Packers and Titans who all have playoff aspirations. It would not surprise me if the Texans have a record below .500 entering their Week 8 bye. After their bye, the Texans have a somewhat easier schedule, which will give them the potential to surge in the second half of the season. The Browns in Week 10, the Titans in Week 17, and the Colts in their two matchups in Weeks 13 and 15 will challenge the Texans, but they can easily win two, maybe even three of those four games. They will also play the Jaguars, a Tom Brady-less Patriots team, the Lions, the Bears and the Bengals. These are all teams who at least on paper project to be worse teams than the Texans in 2020. This season looks like it will be the tale of two halves for Houston and their main issue will be health. If they can stay healthy on both offense and defense, I strongly believe that they will be able to compete with anybody in the NFL, but that is a big if. It will not take much for the Texans to win their division in the AFC South, probably 9 or 10 wins, so I like their odds.

The Texans will be a very intriguing team to watch in 2020 and I will definitely try to make it to at least one Texans game this year, here are the five I would try to go to and think you should as well:

  • Week 1: Texans at Chiefs
  • Week 2: Ravens at Texans
  • Week 10: Texans at Browns
  • Week 13: Texans at Colts
  • Week 17: Titans at Texans

These five games will be very telling for the Texans. Week 1 against the Chiefs, that is the first game of the year and a rematch from the playoffs last season when the Texans blew it major league and allowed the Chiefs to go on an offensive tear in the second quarter, ending the Texans’ chances of winning. Week 2 against the Ravens will be a battle of Watson and Lamar Jackson, two dynamic young quarterbacks. If the Texans get blown out of the water in those two games, that can be a telltale sign for the Texans this season. If they compete in those two games however, maybe win one of them, look out because it might be a sign of good things to come. Week 10 against the Browns will be a nice test for the Texans, a couple weeks after their bye, against a team who has a highly potent offense on paper. Finally, Week 15 against the Colts and Week 17 against the Titans will be crucial for the Texans and their playoff hopes. The Texans, Colts and Titans will all be in the conversation for being the top team in the AFC South and it will most likely come down to the final few weeks and it will be exciting to watch.
