Former Jaguars Running Back Maurice Jones-Drew Retires On Twitter

Former Jacksonville Jaguars running back, Maurice Jones-Drew, tweeted “all good things come to an end,” with an attached message informing the world he will retire from the NFL.

Jones-Drew was signed through the 2016 season with the Oakland Raiders but has decided to forgo around $5 million. In his first season as a Raider, he only played in 12 games — started one — and saw career lows in almost every category. In fact, he saw his overall production bottom out after a 2012 foot injury: since then, he has been on and off the field with a variety of ailments, which has prevented him from getting back to his top-caliber former self.

But it is hard to forget that at one time — specifically between 2008-2011 — he was one of the best running backs in the league: garnering 5,145 yards, 40 touchdowns and averaging 4.45 YPC in four seasons. He was the Jaguars’ work horse, who did not get national attention because he played on one of the worst franchises since the new millennium. In eight years with the Jaguars, they only had one winning record and only made the playoffs one time.

He finishes his career with 8,167 rushing yards, 79 total touchdowns and 4.4 YPC: probably not hall of fame numbers, but again nothing matches how four-year period of utter domination.
