Ex-Stanford Coach Johnny Dawkins To Become Next UCF Coach

Former Stanford basketball coach Johnny Dawkins has reached an agreement in principle to become University of Central Florida’s next head coach, according to a source who confirmed the news to CBS Sports.

Ex-Stanford Coach Johnny Dawkins To Become Next UCF Coach

An official announcement is expected soon.

Dawkins, 52, was fired from Stanford last week after eight seasons that ended in just one trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the Pac-12, Dawkins’ career record is 66-78. He also led the Cardinal to two NIT Championships, and was 156-115 in eight seasons with the team. Nevertheless, the former Duke standout (a star guard with the Blue Devils from 1982 to 1986) and Duke assistant still managed to land the job at UCF less than a week after losing his job at Stanford. The Cardinal went 15-15 last season and was 8-10 in Pac-12 play, finishing ninth in the conference.

Coincidentally enough, Central Florida’s Athletic Director, Danny White, is the son of Duke AD Kevin White, yet another connection between the two schools.
