Ex-NFL Wide Receiver Braylon Edwards Saves Life Of 80-Year-Old Man In YMCA Assault

Ex-NFL wide receiver Braylon Edwards helped save the life of an 80-year-old man after he was seen being assaulted in a YMCA in Detroit.

Edwards overhead loud noises in the locker room and saw the incident, then went over to de-escalate the situation. The victim was taken to a local hospital and the accused was taken into custody by local police.

“If it wasn’t for that intervention, we could very easily be talking about someone’s death,” Farmington Hills Chief of Police Jeff King said. “He absolutely saved that man’s life… I’ve been a police officer going on 29 years. When these assaults are ongoing, really bad things can happen.”

Edwards said he was just “minding his business” before intervening to break up the fight.

He was praised by local police and authorities. The incident allegedly involved a dispute about the volume of music being played.

“The noise escalates, and then you can hear some pushing and shoving, so you know what fighting sounds like,” Edwards said. “But once I hear a thud, that’s when I got up and turned around… At the end of the day, that’s what you do.”

The alleged attacker was taken into custody and was immediately hit with an attempted murder charge. Currently, the man remains in custody with bail set at $250,000.

Edwards, 41, spent eight seasons in the NFL with the Cleveland, New York, San Fransisco and Seattle with 40 career touchdowns and more than 5,500 total yards. As a former player, he said that he knew the signs of a concussion.

The victim is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.
