Eagles Will Bear The ‘Home Jersey Curse’ This Super Bowl – Is It Just Superstition?

On Feb. 9, the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of the second-most recent Super Bowl, which the Chiefs won.

Since the NFC has the “home team” honor this year, the Eagles have elected to wear their home green uniforms for the game, leaving the Chiefs with away jerseys the same ones they wore in their win two years ago. But do the jerseys really matter?

Conventional wisdom says no, but the “away” team has won 16 of the last 20 Super Bowls perhaps another bit of magic spurring a Chiefs threepeat.

Funnily enough, though, both the Chiefs, beating the San Francisco 49ers last year, and the Eagles, triumphing over the New England Patriots in 2017, have recently won the Lombardi in home colors. In their modern eras, the Chiefs are 2-1 in red and 1-0 in white, while the Eagles haven’t worn away colors, putting up a 1-2 record in home green.

Heading into Super Bowl LIX, 37 of the previous 58 Super Bowls have been won by the white jerseys. The Eagles, in sum, have chosen to bet against that trend.

While the color of the uniforms isn’t likely to change the outcome in itself, the numbers have spoken, in concordance with Vegas: Kansas City is favored to win in New Orleans.
