Don Mattingly Could Join Blue Jays Coaching Staff This Weekend

Don Mattingly appears set to join the Toronto Blue Jays‘ coaching staff.

The former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins is in “deep discussions” with the Canadian baseball franchise, the New York Post reports.

The official announcement could come as soon as this weekend.

Mattingly is best known for his track record as a player.

In his 14-year  MLB career with the New York Yankees, Mattingly recorded more than 2,100 hits with 222 home runs.

For the 2023 Hall of Fame, he is one of eight candidates on the ballot, as announced by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee.

The list includes Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling.

Mattingly first began his managerial career with the Dodgers in 2011.

While he had three 90-plus winning seasons with the organization, the two parties mutually parted ways after losing to the New York Mets in the 2015 NLDS.

He then spent seven seasons with the Marlins – having only one with a winning record, which occurred in the shortened year of 2020.

After his contract expired this past season, the Marlins and Mattingly came to an agreement to mutually part ways.

Now the 61-year-old will join a Blue Jays staff led by John Schneider, who served as the Club’s interim manager before earning the full-time gig and a three-year contract.

The Blue Jays hope that the move will help the team continue to prosper after a disappointing ending last year.

The team was swept in the wild card series against the Seattle Mariners this fall after blowing an 8-1 lead in game two.

The Jays in the regular season had a 92-70 record and finished second in the AL East.
