Dodgers Pitcher Dustin May Out With Elbow Injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers got hit with another injury, this time with their pitcher Dustin May. This month, the 25-year-old will have his right flexor tendon repaired on July 18. The team said that Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the season-ending procedure in Los Angeles.

Back in May, the L.A. pitcher went to the injured list (I.L.) due to right elbow pain and was diagnosed with a flexor pronator strain. Manager Dave Roberts said he would be on the I.L. list for at least a month, but after having a platelet-rich plasma injection and rehabbing six weeks ago, it was announced last week that he will be having the season-ending surgery.

This isn’t May’s first season-ender, as his 2021 season was cut very short due to having Tommy John surgery two months into the year. After coming back from reconstructive elbow surgery, he returned last August and pitched six games before lower back tightness ended his season.

In nine starts, May was 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 34 strikeouts this season. His future as a starter could be in jeopardy, as he has missed most of the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to injuries.

In the pitching rotation, the Dodgers had Julio Urías come back off the injured list recently and Walker Buehler should make his return coming off Tommy John surgery later in the season.

From Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels in their win 11-4, the Dodgers had Tony Gonsolin lead the way in their most recent match. Both pitchers Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan split their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, as Clayton Kershaw is still on the 15-day injured list due to a shoulder injury. Michael Grove and Caleb Ferguson have come in as relief, but in general, the Dodger’s pitching staff has struggled, despite being second in the NL West with a 50-38 record.
