Davidson Refuses To Retire Stephen Curry’s Number Until He Graduates

On the athletics front, Stephen Curry is the best thing to happen to Davidson University. While the North Carolina school is usually overshadowed by the likes of Duke and UNC, Curry has almost singlehandedly made Davidson a nationally known program.

But despite that, the school won’t bend the rules for one of their favorite sons. Davidson policy states that only the numbers of athletes who graduated can be retired. Curry left Charlotte early and, therefore, his number won’t be raised to the rafters.

“I knew what I signed up for when I went to Davidson,” Curry said according to ESPN. “I made a promise to coach [Bob] McKillop and my family that when I left school back in ’09 that that would be accomplished — and it will be soon. Hopefully sooner than later.”

In fact, despite Curry’s popularity, no one at Davidson is even sure who would make the final call on granting him an exemption. “It’s one of those things where, I’m not even sure who would make that decision to be honest with you, just because it’s never come up before,” athletic director Jim Murphy said. “I assume it would be the board of trustees.”

“There has not been an exemption for it, to my understanding, for anyone,” he continued. “The policy itself speaks a lot to what Davidson is all about. It’d be an interesting discussion, but it hasn’t been started yet.”

The issue is further complicated by the fact that Davidson doesn’t offer summer courses. Curry, however, insists that he has a plan to finish his coursework.
