D’Angelo Russell Caught At Airport With Weed, Twitter Reacts

Brooklyn Nets All-Star point guard D’Angelo Russell set a lot of career highs in his second season after being traded by the Los Angeles Lakers. It appears he was trying to reach new ones on Wednesday night. The 23-year-old Ohio State product was cited at a New York airport for possession of marijuana.

Russell was flying from LaGuardia airport to his native Louisville, Kentucky when TSA workers flagged him for what at first appeared to be a can of Arizona Iced Tea in his bag. Then, they found a hidden compartment in the can filled with marijuana and he was questioned by the police.

Russell received a summons to appear in court for marijuana possession of less than 50 grams, according to a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey. The citation Russell received is a violation under New York law and is punishable by a fine of $100 or less.

If an NBA played “has been convicted of (including a plea of guilty, no contest or nolo contendere to) the use or possession of marijuana in violation of the law,” then they have to enter into the league’s marijuana program under the current collective bargaining agreement. Russell will not face a suspension unless he has a second and third violation of the marijuana policy.

During the season, Russell averaged 21.1 points and seven assist per game. He earned his first all-star nod as well. The Nets put up a strong fight against the Philadelphia Sixers in the playoffs but were eliminated in five games. Russell is a free agent this off season.
