Coco Gauff Smashes Racket After Frustrating QF Loss At The Australian Open

Coco Gauff’s run at the Australian Open came to a disappointing end early Tuesday morning after losing in straight sets to Elina Svitolina.

Gauff was the third-ranked women’s tennis player in the world before this match with twelfth-ranked Svitolina. Gauff did not have her best match as Svitolina cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 match victory to secure her spot in the semi-finals. Svitolina will face world number one Aryna Sabalenka, as both have yet to drop a set this entire tournament.

After the match, Gauff released her frustration in the back, smashing her racket repeatedly. Gauff is usually very calm, cool, and collected, but the star was visibly upset after the match.

Gauff spoke to the media post-match about the video of her slamming her racket and explained that not everything needs to be shown. Gauff was clearly trying to find a place to let off her anger, but cameras still saw it. “I tried to go somewhere where I thought there wasn’t a camera because I don’t necessarily like breaking rackets,” Gauff said.

The Australian Open is one of the two majors that Gauff has not won; her best result came in 2024, when she reached the semi-finals.

Gauff will have some time before she attempts to defend her crown at Roland-Garros and win another French Open title.
