Chiefs’ Rashee Rice Expected To Miss Extended Time With Knee Injury

The Kansas City Chiefs’ day last Sunday went from bad to worse after a Patrick Mahomes interception.

The quarterback attempted to chase down the Los Angeles Chargers ball carrier when he slammed into his second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice as they each looked to fall on a loose ball. Rice did not get up and needed to be carted off the field. Right after the game, the NFL media reported a tear in his ACL, but head coach Andy Reid said he is still undergoing testing and that his timeline is up in the air. Reid made clear that Rice will not be with the team for an extended period.

“We’re getting the swelling out of his knee and then he’ll have further tests next week, so really don’t have anything to tell you,” he said. “For his sake, we’re really hoping things work out for the best, but let’s just see where it goes. Leave it up to the doctors to see. I’m definitely not a doctor.”

In his place, tight end Travis Kelce played his best game of the 2024 season with a seven-catch 89-yard day that helped the Chiefs score 17 unanswered for their tenth consecutive victory dating back to last season. Along with Kelce, veteran running back Kareem Hunt had 14 carries for 69 yards, and rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy racked up 73 yards and a touchdown as his breakout season continued.

Rice currently leads the Chiefs in receiving yards, receptions, and targets, even after missing out on most of Sunday’s game. He burst onto the scene in 2023, his rookie year, with 79 catches, 938 yards, and seven touchdowns after being drafted with the 55th pick in the second round by the Chiefs.

Kansas City looks to continue its winning ways at home against the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football this week. ESPN Bet currently lists them as 5.5-point favorites.
