Celtics Guard Kyrie Irving’s New Nike Kyrie 5 Shoes Draw On Ancient Egyptian Themes [PHOTOS]

Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving teamed up with Nike and Concept this week to unveil a new pair of “Ikhet” Nike Kyrie 5 sneakers, whose design appears strongly influenced by Ancient Egyptian symbols.

Here’s a first look at the shoes:

For starters, the shoes are sand-colored and have a light purple sole, a hue that reportedly alludes to the color of the sunset behind the pyramids in Egypt.

The sneakers’ red tongue, meanwhile, is a tribute to the Sphynx, a creature from Egyptian mythology whose statue in the country was reportedly believed to have been painted red at a certain moment in history.

The shoe’s heal includes the Eye of Ra, one of Egypt’s most prominent deities who was the sun god.

The Nike swoosh also seems to draw on Ancient Egyptian art, as there are little pyramid-like shapes embedded in it.

Here is how Concepts Creative Director Deon Point described the sneakers’ design.

Per slamonline.com:

“I found out the mortar used remains a mystery to scientists — they still can’t figure how it stuck together, but it’s some of the strongest stuff ever made. I learned that the limestone glowing in the sun made the pyramids glow brighter than a diamond. And one thing that really got me: there was a 20-ton door on one of the pyramids that was so precise, you can’t squeeze a credit card through the seams — but it can be opened with one hand.”

Irving’s sneakers are set to be released just after Christmas, on Dec. 26. Thus, it will surely prove to be a great holiday gift for any major NBA fan. No information regarding the sneakers’ price has yet been made available.
