Philadelphia Eagles Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley are shutting down rumors of tension with wide receiver A.J. Brown earlier this week. The discussion came after the Eagles’ first loss of the season, a 21-27 defeat to the Denver Broncos.

Still, both players insisted it was a positive conversion focused on improving the team. Barkley described it as “a good thing.” Hurts called it “teammates being teammates.”

The interaction took place on Monday, just a day after the Eagles’ sluggish performance against Denver. Brown has struggled to find consistency this season. He caught five passes for only 43 yards, failing to reach 50 receiving yards in four of five games. Barkley also struggled, rushing only 30 yards on six carries in his last game.

Both players emphasized that the conversation wasn’t heated, but rather a chance to regroup and refocus as a unit.

Hurts echoed that sentiment, saying the discussion was simply “teammates being teammates.” He explained, “how the team talked about accountability, and they should move forward together.”

Head coach Nick Sirianni also supported the meeting. He praised his players, who took the time to talk about things constructively, saying it showed leadership and growth. The message is clear: learn from the loss, and keep pushing towards the next game.

Now the attention turns to how the Eagles will respond on the field, with the New York Giants up next. To prepare, the Eagles need to tighten communication and clean up mistakes. The coaching staff has emphasized fundamentals, sharper routes, stronger protection and more focus on finishing drives. Hurts said, “That it’s not about reinventing the playbook, but about execution and consistency.”

The team knows they can’t afford another slow start.

The Eagles have their heads high and aim to bounce back stronger. This setback is motivation to prove they are still contenders.

The public has grown tired of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, fulfilling the most boring, played-out media cycle in sports. In desperate need of a villain in the stories they create in their heads, fans are using Kansas City’s sustained success to transform the team from late-2010s darling to conniving, uninspired cheaters. 

“If winning football games makes you a villain, we’re going to keep going out there and doing it,” Mahomes said this week. “We embrace who we are. We believe we play the game the right way, with a lot of heart and passion for the game.”

We’ve seen this countless times in the modern sports landscape. It seems like too much attention inevitably leads to vitriol. The New York Yankees, never popular due to decades of success, didn’t adopt their “Evil Empire” moniker until 2002, right at the tail end of a four-title dynasty. The New England Patriots went from nobodies to a league-wide scourge when Tom Brady started racking up Super Bowls in the early 2000s. Teaming with Randy Moss in 2007 and Rob Gronkowski later on helped cement that status for another decade.

It comes up in works of fiction, too. WWE star John Cena, the company hero, walked out to raucous, overwhelming boos for most of his career as fans begged for a change in the world title picture. Harvey Dent, shortly before fulfilling his own prophecy in The Dark Knight, announced to Bruce Wayne, “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

On the verge of a historic three-peat, this is where the Chiefs find themselves in the sporting world. More than going out of their way, many fans are practically doing inverted handstands trying to find ways to cheapen Kansas City’s accomplishments. 

The excuses are comprehensive. It’s rigged. The refs are biased. The Chiefs play soft. Mahomes isn’t as exciting anymore. The brand of football is unappealing and bad for the game. Taylor Swift shouldn’t be on my television screen. Andy Reid is carrying Mahomes. Mahomes is carrying Reid. The defense is carrying both of them.

Here are the facts: the Chiefs are a profoundly talented football team worthy of appearing in their third straight Super Bowl, and Mahomes is even more talented now than he was when anyone with a couch and some salsa was drooling over him in 2019.

It’s acceptable to root for someone else in the Super Bowl — Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Eagles are just as deserving. It also feels unjust on some cosmic level that Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have to spend another year watching from home. 

Kansas City is the Goliath, talented from every aspect with a resume of undeniable greatness. If fans need heroes, then the Chiefs can be their foil. Minimizing their accomplishments to do that, however, feels like a small and petty betrayal to the game itself. Without any organic rooting interest, spending a few hours hoping that supremely gifted individuals get exposed as frauds feels like time wasted.

As the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs prepare for a Super Bowl rematch, the traditional playbook for both teams is likely being refined and sharpened in the interest of making one final push. 

As both teams look for ways to keep their opponent off-balance, both coaching staffs are likely landing on the same answer: quarterback mobility. It could very well decide the Super Bowl.

To get to this point, the Eagles and Chiefs have relied on certain strengths, some similar and others vastly different. Philadelphia has leaned heavily on running back Saquon Barkley, who rushed for 2,005 yards in the regular season, and Jalen Hurts’ physicality on rushes, scrambles and sneaks. Kansas City has relied on Patrick Mahomes’ arm, which led the team to countless one-score victories this year. Both teams boast daunting run defenses as well, which have been vastly helpful in forcing turnovers and keeping them in close games. 

In the playoffs, the Eagles have simply perfected the system they used in the regular season. Barkley remains a bell cow, and Hurts has been a powerhouse out of the pocket, rushing 23 times for four touchdowns in three games. 

In their postseason run, however, the Chiefs have stepped things up a notch. Mahomes has finally begun leaving the pocket, a change that absolutely killed the Texans and Bills. Buffalo could have dealt with Mahomes’ arm, but his legs were what eventually sent the Bills packing in the AFC Championship game.

In the process of shedding their regular-season identity, the Chiefs have come to rely on Mahomes’ full arsenal, something they intentionally restrain most of the year. This is the same reason Travis Kelce has become notorious for quiet ends to the regular season late in his career. Kansas City prefers to preserve its stars and unleash them at opportune times.

With Mahomes capable of breaking off massive chunk plays through the air and on the ground, the Chiefs have again become the most dangerous offense in the NFL. The team’s defense has always been elite. If the Eagles have any chance, it will depend on Barkley pulling through by himself. Hurts will have to outplay Mahomes. Doing that in the passing game is practically impossible, but he’s one of a handful of quarterbacks in the league who can do so by rushing.

The last time these two teams played in a Super Bowl, the Eagles were the better team in most areas, and Mahomes made up the difference. This time around, the Chiefs are the ones playing with more chips. Hurts is Philadelphia’s only meaningful variable, the team’s most dynamic player whose performance can singlehandedly make the difference or lead directly to another defeat.

After a horrendous season with the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers seems to be coming to terms with a potential end. Not only could a Week 18 game against the Dolphins mark the end of his tenure in New York, but it could also be the final game of his NFL career.

“I’m just more resigned to the reality of the situation,” Rodgers told reporters Wednesday. “I think there’s gonna be change here, and if I’m a part of the change, then I just want to make sure everybody knows that I have nothing but gratitude for my time here…. If I wanna play and they don’t want me here, then I’ll see if there’s other options.”

Rodgers went on to call his time with the Jets “the best two years” of his life, an unexpected comment from the four-time MVP and Super Bowl winner. His tenure with the Jets has been marred by injury and countless frustrating losses, which seems to suggest that the comment is either facetious or related to events off the field.

When the former Packers quarterback first arrived in East Rutherford, he brought the idea that the Jets could secure a quarterback talent by importing one. The team has tried this before, most notably with Brett Favre in 2008,  but the idea felt sound this time. With one of the most talented young cores in the league, it felt like the Jets were a quarterback away. 

The 2023 season was a devastating blow, one in which the promise of Rodgers went up in smoke on the first drive of the season. But losing him immediately preserved his potential; 2024 was supposed to be the year the pieces came together. Sure enough, Rodgers played a full season, and on paper, put up passable statistics for an NFL quarterback. The reality was worse than losing him to injury, however.

In a season in which the Jets went 4-12, a systematic failure by every measure, they lost nine games by 10 points or less. Nearly every time, Rodgers had opportunities late in those games to make a difference, the ultimate marker of a great quarterback. Delivering in those moments could have meant a playoff run. Instead, he performed so poorly that the team is in line for a top-10 draft pick. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.

The team did everything it could. Owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh and then Joe Douglas. The organization brought in an army of former Packers talent, up to and including star wide receiver Davante Adams. He replaced Mike Williams, who was traded after Rodgers spoke badly of him to the media. At the end of the day, none of it mattered. It all came down to Rodgers, and he failed.

Now, star wide receiver Garrett Wilson is appearing in trade rumors. Running back Breece Hall is considered a wasted talent instead of a surefire Pro-Bowler. Lockdown cornerback Sauce Gardner is talking trash about his own team on Instagram. The Jets have come crashing back down to their longtime reputation as one of the most dysfunctional franchises in sports. The only difference now is that there’s a common denominator. At least it was a good two years for him.

For the first time in his NFL career, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been crowded out of the elite tier. The three-time Super Bowl Champion was not named to the initial 2024 Pro Bowl roster, an honor he has received every year since becoming Kansas City’s starter in 2018.

For all of Mahomes’ accolades and accomplishments, as well as the Chiefs’ current status as Super Bowl favorites, there are few arguments to justify a spot for him in the Pro Bowl. If he competed in the NFC, there would be a remote chance of him pulling rank on the likes of Jared Goff or Jayden Daniels. In the AFC, however, there is no debate. Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow are dominating the race for MVP and all three have made an unimpeachable Pro Bowl case. Mahomes has not.

Over the course of the season, Jackson and Allen have delivered virtuoso performances through spectacularly dynamic play. Jackson has thrown for 3,955 yards and 39 touchdowns while only throwing four interceptions; Allen has thrown for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns. Jackson has been a consistent menace in the rushing game while Allen has also proven more than capable of running when needed, particularly in several high-scoring games in the past month.

While these two have effortlessly blazed their teams’ trails to playoff berths, Burrow has been on his own mission, singlehandedly carrying an otherwise unremarkable Bengals team back into contention. Seemingly always in close games despite sustained explosive production, he has thrown for 4,641 yards and 42 touchdowns. He’s a staggering one-man show dragging Cincinnati, kicking and screaming, within one game of the postseason heading into Week 18.

On paper, Mahomes’ 2024 statistics aren’t necessarily foreign to this conversation. Closely mirroring Allen in passing, he has thrown for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. But Allen has been a threat on the ground as well and had a number of heroic performances in important games. Mahomes has been more conservative, reflecting the Chiefs’ deliberate, grinding approach as a unit this season.

It has happened in the past that great players have sacrificed individual honors for the greater cause. Tom Brady had several seasons that were less productive on paper in the prime of his career, as the Patriots enjoyed elite defensive play that allowed the team to slow down opponents. Brady’s achievements in those seasons were as a general, not a playmaker. 

To say that Mahomes has completely adopted this piloting role would also be misguided. He remains a dynamic talent and the Chiefs are not afraid of creative play calls. His statistics are perfectly reasonable for an elite quarterback. His failure to receive a Pro Bowl invitation is more a result of timing. 

As Mahomes takes a step back in the interest of his team’s thorough and fundamentally sound play, it just so happens that three extremely talented quarterbacks in his conference have all had to step up. The AFC’s top trio of MVP candidates are perpetually on the front line, integral performers each and every week. It’s the role that Mahomes has assumed for the majority of his career. It’s the one he assumed when his entire team infamously failed him in his only Super Bowl defeat in 2021.

When doling out individual honors, the NFL looks for players who have made a singularly valuable contribution to their team, primarily in the form of statistics and victories. In the playoffs, however, the teams that most often succeed are the ones with multiple ways to win. It seems like an increasingly distinct possibility that Mahomes and Kansas City gets the last laugh.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson made history Wednesday when he passed Michael Vick as the all-time leader in rushing yards by a quarterback. He rushed for 87 yards on the ground in a 31-2 victory over the Texans, raising his total to a staggering 6,110 rushing yards across seven NFL seasons.

“It feels unreal, to be honest with you,” Jackson said after the game. “I just give God all the glory. I’m grateful, man, because that’s a record that’s been held for a long time with Michael Vick, one of my favorite players. That’s just dope.”

Facing a stout Texans defense on Christmas Day, Jackson still managed to deliver as Baltimore’s virtuoso, beating Houston in every way imaginable. As he has done all season, the two-time MVP was efficient through the air and highly elusive on the ground. He threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns on 10 completions, and could have done far more through the air if the Ravens didn’t put the game away early – 48 of his 87 rushing yards came on a single run to the end zone, his fourth rushing touchdown of the season.

Without losing any of his dazzling rushing ability, Jackson is well on his way to his first season with 4,000 passing yards in another MVP-caliber campaign. Bills quarterback Josh Allen may prevent Jackson from winning the award for a third time, but his value to Baltimore is priceless in many ways. The Ravens are preparing for their sixth playoff appearance in seven seasons. Adding running back Derrick Henry in 2024 has helped the team expand its potential, but Jackson is still an entirely unique talent serving as conductor for one of the greatest offenses in the history of modern football.

With Vick’s rushing record broken and yet another trip to the postseason on the horizon, Jackson is closing in on possibilities that have long been considered theoretical. In the past, the vast majority of running quarterbacks have either cut back on the ground late in their careers or suffered the consequences. Jackson is doing neither.

As mobile quarterbacks go, Allen and Russell Wilson are success stories, successful rushers who learned to lean more heavily on their arms and extended their careers. Cam Newton, Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III are cautionary tales, talented players who relied too heavily on their mobility and suffered career-shortening injuries. Entering his seventh year, Jackson is doing his own thing; he’s developing as a passer without sacrificing anything on the ground. He’s burning at both ends and only growing brighter.

There’s only one point of comparison for what Jackson is trying to do: the man he just passed for the rushing record. Vick never sacrificed either. But Vick’s career is also a titanic “what if” in the history of the NFL, an undeniable talent losing two years of his prime to prison and suspension. By the time he began to truly develop his passing game with the Eagles, he was already nine years into a seven-season career. His legs didn’t last much longer, and he never managed to reach 4,000 passing yards.

Jackson has suffered his share of injuries too, but barring any unforeseen setback, he won’t be interrupted as Vick was. The window is wide open for him to win a Super Bowl, the NFL’s ultimate metric for quarterback success. He hasn’t climbed that mountain yet, but he’s only getting better. 

Jackson has been derided for years, labeled a glorified running back in a dressed-up wildcat formation. But the doubters are melting away as he gradually becomes the most dangerous offensive player in NFL history. A championship victory would abolish skepticism altogether.  

Reporters asked quarterback Aaron Rodgers if he intended to return to the New York Jets for the 2025 season this week.

“I think so, yeah,” Rodgers said.

Most Jets fans have been ensnared in a thousand-yard stare for weeks and presumably didn’t react to the news.

To say that the Jets’ 2024 season has not gone to plan would be like saying that the Titanic came up a little short. With an army of young talent on both sides of the ball and a four-time MVP under center, New York is 2-8 and eliminated from playoff contention. Head coach Robert Saleh was fired and scapegoated for the team’s struggles, but the team hasn’t improved since his departure. It has been an unmitigated disaster.

Rodgers announcing a vague, non-committal intent to return certainly doesn’t feel like good news. It’s not just his poor performance this season, which has been a consistent issue. In 2023, the Jets’ front office made every accommodation to secure Rodgers, signing many former teammates and even notoriously shaky offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. 

It all turned out to be dead weight—even newly acquired star Davante Adams has been underwhelming—but Rodgers was supposed to be the foundation and carry it. It simply hasn’t worked out, and it will take an entire offseason to untangle the mess of young stars and washed-up former Packers and get back to square one. That offseason will apparently be delayed now, as Rodgers claims not to be done yet.

On the other hand, what’s the rush? The Jets haven’t done anything previously to prove that they can move on from Rodgers. The problem isn’t that the team can’t pick quarterback prospects. Geno Smith and Sam Darnold both turned out to be highly capable NFL quarterbacks. The problem is that they only realized their potential after leaving New York and developing in more competent hands. At this point, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before Zach Wilson finds a forever home and makes a playoff appearance or two while the Jets wallow in the AFC East.

Worse than Rodgers, the failure of the month for a team in perpetual meltdown, the Jets have issues on a systemic, organizational level. They have made it an insidious habit to waste young talent, blame the wrong people and invest in misguided solutions.

So when Rodgers took the stand Wednesday and announced that he might chill in East Rutherford for another season, it was difficult to get too broken up about it. Sure, things are bad now, terrible even. But the only difference between this season and every Jets season of the last decade is that there was hope for improvement. 2025 feels like more of the same either way.

Through 10 weeks of the 2024 NFL season, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs remain perfect with a 9-0 record. Between that and back-to-back Super Bowl victories, they should figure as the prohibitive favorite to win another one next February. 

Many people still aren’t convinced, however. For years, the Chiefs’ identity has revolved around its offense. Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce have formed a dynastic duo, and since Tyreek Hill’s departure, Andy Reid’s innovative schemes have proven capable of turning an army of average wide receivers into playmakers. The team has been notoriously, sometimes frustratingly, fun to watch.

This year’s team is markedly different. It’s very reasonable to argue that Mahomes is having the worst season of his career. He currently ranks 11th in passing yards per game, behind Dak Prescott and Russell Wilson. Young breakout stars Isiah Pacheco and Rashee Rice both went down with injuries early in the year. 

Kelce has re-emerged as the best tight end in the league, but that hasn’t been enough to promote much scoring. The Chiefs also rank 11th in points per game, just ahead of the Steelers and Falcons. 

But while it would appear that Kansas City’s offense has regressed from a statistical standpoint, it may simply be a matter of game flow. Gone are the days of wild Chiefs shootouts, as the team’s defense has become an elite unit capable of shutting down most offenses in the league. Christopher Jones leads a monstrous defensive line that has shut down rushers all year, while a solid secondary has proven capable of keeping most receivers in check. As a whole, the defense has allowed the fourth fewest yards per game this season.

Mahomes’ gunslinging days seem to be behind him. In its place, Kansas City has adopted a surgical, grinding approach without losing any of its effectiveness. Not counting the preseason, the team hasn’t lost since Christmas Day in 2023.

It’s easy to poke holes in the team’s undefeated record. Just last week, Broncos kicker Wil Lutz had a game-winning field goal blocked late in the fourth quarter. In Week 1, Isaiah Likely was one toe away from scoring a walkoff touchdown for the Ravens. Realistically, the Chiefs could very well have three or four losses if things had gone slightly differently. They’ve proven unflinchingly effective in crunch time, however, closing out tight games with elite efficiency.

It’s also easy to say that the Chiefs aren’t alone in the NFL’s top tier. Lamar Jackson is having an MVP-caliber season for the Ravens, who have also added Derrick Henry to their backfield. The Lions might have the best offense of the decade, featuring dynamic playmakers up and down the depth chart. Christian McCaffrey is back and the 49ers are rounding into form. The Bills and Eagles have both bucked expectations and returned to an elite level. 

It’s a crowded playoff race, and therefore tempting to fade the Chiefs and their deliberate play style. But Kansas City has dealt with serious postseason threats before, and in those situations, few have proven capable of out-dueling Mahomes. At various points in his career, Tom Brady wasn’t a fantasy football darling either, but he knew how to take care of business and trust an elite defense. It’s a distinct possibility that it’s the next step for Mahomes, too.

After three games, the New York Jets are 2-1 and in a comfortable position in the AFC East division. Aaron Rodgers has remained healthy and delivered one of the best performances of Week 3 in a commanding win over the Patriots. So far, so good.

For most Jets fans, the report on the team’s season to this point is that there hasn’t been a disaster — yet. Heading into the season, the Jets received national attention as fans and insiders waited to see if Rodgers could effectively lead an alleged Super Bowl contender at age 39. The answer appears to be yes, and for the first time in more than a decade, the Jets seem to be in a good place.

Stressful, isn’t it? For fans who are accustomed to chaotic, hopeless quarterback shuffling, crushing injuries, anemic offenses and plain bad luck, prosperity might feel strange. It may feel instinctual for some to hold their ear to the ground and listen for the other shoe. But in a team interview earlier this week, Rodgers said that this mentality has to go.

“I think, you know, it’s easier when you’re kind of getting kicked in the teeth to kind of come together, ‘it’s us against the world, it’s us against the big bad media whose saying how bad we are,’ you know?” Rodgers said. “We can kind of come together, but can you still come together and have the same approach when everybody’s kind of starting to sing your praises a little bit. I think that’s the mark of a great team, just can you handle the success part, with the same focus, the same mentality, the same mindset, the same energy, when you’re starting to get on a little bit of a roll.”

Handling the success, as Rodgers put it, is something that hasn’t come easy for New York teams in this century. The Yankees have been spectacular underachievers since 2009 while the Mets’ innovations in the realm of misery are practically patented. The Knicks and Nets have alternated between nearly there and not even close for 30 years. The Rangers and Islanders never put the pieces together. The Giants stole two Super Bowls, but never did so with the expectation of success behind them. Eli Manning had to prove people wrong; Tom Brady was the one who had to prove them right.

This is the big-market tradition staring Rodgers in the face after a career spent almost exclusively in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In the bright lights, it seems harder to grow comfortable with success. People are more skeptical of greatness and find a perverted sense of justification in failure. The Jets experienced it just last season. Of course Rodgers went down on the first drive of the season, Jets fans said. It’s the Jets, they said.

Separating facts from fears, however, the team’s roster is impeccable. Even after suffering some injuries on defense, star cornerback Sauce Gardner still leads a group of 11 starters that could all make Pro Bowl cases this season.

Rodgers is far from alone on offense. Breece Hall might be the best running back in the league, while 20-year-old Braelon Allen is lighting it up alongside him. Garrett Wilson is the only first-round draft pick to catch a touchdown from Rodgers in the quarterback’s entire career. Allen Lazard and Mike Williams are making themselves known too. In short, the team is clicking.

With a 2-1 record and minimal drama going into Week 4, Rodgers is observing a calm that he likely hasn’t experienced since signing with New York last year. Many questions have been answered and seem to favor the Jets. The young team has to adjust to a new identity now. The veteran will have to be the one that helps them realize it.

Following a series loss to the Astros and a blown five-run lead to the Nationals Wednesday night, mainstream baseball fans are readily prepared to dismiss the Mets’ June resurgence as a brief respite from mediocrity. These fans may end up being correct, but at the moment, they’re missing what’s right in front of them.

If not for an illogical rule, the Mets would currently be a Wild Card team.

In order to keep things moving, we will have to skip a considerable amount of the discourse surrounding Mets closer Edwin Diaz, who was suspended for 10 games for using an illegal substance on the mound on June 24.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume that he was extremely guilty. He has repeatedly denied this, arguing that he only used rosin. Umpires also didn’t give him the opportunity to wash his hands, as they often do for pitchers with overly sticky hands. But all of that is irrelevant to the real problem here.

If a team loses its best starting pitcher for 10 games, someone would simply have to fill in for a spot start. The pitcher would return after another week and hardly be missed, regardless of his ability. If a team loses its best relief pitcher for 10 games, however, the bullpen implodes.

There are at least three Mets losses in the last week where Diaz would have likely made a difference if he was available. He might have been able to pitch in at least two of those games. Instead, an exhausted bullpen had to carry on without him and struggled.

On June 29, New York allowed five runs in the last two innings against Houston and lost 9-6. The following day, the two teams went to extra innings and the Mets simply ran out of pitching, sending journeyman minor leaguer Matt Festa out to give up five runs in the 11th inning.

On July 1, the team took a 9-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning but still had to have all hands on deck as another minor leaguer, Tyler Jay, nearly blew it as Festa did. New York hung on to win 9-7. On Wednesday night, the team took a 5-0 lead but allowed seven unanswered runs late in the game. Most of these runs were allowed by young starter Christian Scott, who the team left on the mound for the sixth in order to buy the bullpen an additional inning.

All of this led to Thursday when Mets starter Jose Quintana pitched seven innings of shutout baseball before Adrian Houser gave up a solo home run in the eighth and the team lost 1-0.

Even with the wheels falling off late in games, the Mets are still red hot at the plate and firmly in the Wild Card hunt with a 42-43 record. They scored five or more runs for nine straight games between June 23 and July 3. They’re still playing good baseball.

Because Diaz is being treated like a starting pitcher for his offense, however, the team’s remaining relief pitchers are simply being stretched too thin to compete. Diaz will return to the team on July 6, but the damage may already be done. No bullpen in the league needs the All-Star Break more.

The San Diego Padres have been dealt a setback with the announcement that star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a stress reaction in his right thigh bone.

Tatis, who has been struggling with what was initially reported as a quadriceps injury, had his condition clarified after imaging revealed the stress reaction in his femur. Manager Mike Shildt acknowledged that while Tatis could potentially continue playing through the pain, rest is essential for the injury to heal properly.

Leading the team with 14 home runs this season, Tatis’ absence will be felt within the league. His 446-foot homer last Thursday night is a display of the kind of explosive play the Padres will miss. Tatis’ defense, which earned him the NL Gold Glove and Platinum Glove awards last year in his debut season as a right fielder, leaves a hole that will be hard to fill.

Adding to the Padres’ woes, ace pitcher Yu Darvish is dealing with elbow inflammation and will not make his scheduled start against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.

Rob Dillingham did not hold onto his black and grey hat for long, as the San Antonio Spurs sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves last night during the first round of the NBA draft. The Spurs selected the Kentucky PG with the #8 pick, their second selection in the top eight, but struck a deal with Minnesota. In return, the T-Wolves sent back a 2031 first-round pick and a 2030 first-round pick swap.

At face value, the Timberwolves seem to have won the trade. Minnesota needed to address the one-guard position this off-season as Mike Conley turns 37. Dillingham brings youth and energy to his game, and Conley can take him under his wing to teach the rookie how to survive in the league, standing only 6’1”. The hope for the Western Conference finalists is Dillingham can complement star SG Anthony Edwards as he enters his prime.

Meanwhile, the Spurs are looking to build around rookie of the year C Victor Wembenyama but decided to trade away a 19-year-old oozing with talent. The picks they received may not be helpful six years later, with Edwards at age 29. After taking Stephon Castle #4 last night, San Antonio has a backlog of guards, but the team should focus on the present and not the distant future.

Dillingham won SEC sixth man of the year last season, averaging 15.2 points per game and 3.9 assists while shooting 44% from beyond the arc. His running mate, Reed Sheppard, went #3 to the Houston Rockets as the Wildcat guards became the fourth Kentucky duo to be taken in the first ten picks of an NBA draft.

Minnesota and San Antonio are two teams trending in opposite directions. The Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals this season and 56-26 during the regular season. The Spurs finished with the fifth-worst record in the NBA at 22-60 and were drafted in the top four for the second year.

The Detroit Pistons announced Wednesday that they were firing coach Monty Williams after one season. Williams signed a six-year, $78 million contract with the team last offseason, but that historic deal will end prematurely after a horrid 14-68 season.

“Decisions like these are difficult to make, and I want to thank Monty for his hard work and dedication,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a statement. “Coaching has many dynamic challenges that emerge during a season and Monty always handled those with grace. However, after reviewing our performance carefully and assessing our current position as an organization, we will chart a new course moving forward.”

Williams is reportedly not in the running for the open Lakers position and may take a break before pursuing another coaching job. After leaving the Suns in 2023, Williams was originally going to sit out last season to spend time with his wife, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The Pistons still owe him the $65 million remaining on his contract.

With his early dismissal from Detroit, Williams’ bizarre head coaching career in the NBA continues. Despite leading the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals in the 2021-22 season and winning Coach of the Year honors, he was fired in 2023.

Gores personally convinced Williams to take over in Detroit, but team ownership was also reportedly behind the decision to let him go. Williams had been discussing the team’s future with the front office since the season ended under the assumption that he would retain control next year.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed Wednesday that Williams was blindsided by the news.

“I’m told that he is not ready to necessarily just jump right into another job … he wants to coach again, but I think it’s pretty raw today,” Wojnarowski said.

The Pistons’ problems on the court go beyond a single bad season, as the team has flown through coaching regimes and does not possess the draft capital necessary to rebuild. Gores’ decision to sign Williams to an exorbitant contract followed almost immediately by the decision to fire him is a classic sign of a disorganized franchise. The Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa are currently negotiating a contract that could cement the 26-year-old passer as the team’s long-term franchise quarterback. Some still have questions about whether he can thrive in that role, however.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters last week that the two sides were in discussions, but in his usual manner of speaking, he managed to express plenty of emotion while withholding exact details.

“You know, man, I would have an ulcer and a panic attack if I tried to forecast anything that comes to my plate on a day-to-day basis. I haven’t extrapolated in that way,” McDaniel said. “What we’re focused on is communicating with each other. The knowns are that Tua’s representation and our front office are negotiating a contract.”

McDaniel has been very supportive of Tagovailoa since taking over the head coaching position in 2022. The two of them have developed together, building one of the best offenses in the NFL.

But for all of the success that Tagovailoa a has had on the Dolphins, even through injury, in his career, some still doubt that he can handle the workload of an every-week franchise player. In a Sports Illustrated article published earlier this week, anonymous defensive coordinators and front-office executives took turns criticizing the young player.

All the usual jabs were included. Injuries are a serious issue, even though he managed to stay healthy last season behind an elite offensive line. He’s limited as a pocket passer, and he’s lost a lot of the mobility he began his career with. He has a relatively high floor when he’s on the field, but his ceiling will never put him in the league’s top five at his position.

For all of these critiques, some of them fair, in which insiders argue that the Dolphins should be wary of a large contract, none of them refute the fact that Tagovailoa has consistently demonstrated the ability to put his team in the playoffs. He is a key part of an electric offense, one that has been built around him. In this sense, the team has already made its investment. Now it’s simply time to pay.

With Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle down the sidelines and De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert in the backfield, it’s easy to argue that many quarterbacks would fit into Miami’s dynamic scheme. Such an argument would be beside the point, however.

The point is that Tagovailoa has already proven capable in this system. If the team hadn’t encountered brutally cold conditions in its first playoff game this season, it’s reasonable to argue that Miami could have made a deep run. Teams in the NFL seldom have the luxury of deciding between multiple options. The Dolphins have discovered Tagovailoa, surrounded him with talent and created a highly functional offense. That’s not the sort of thing you throw away.

The 2024 NBA Finals have delivered no shortage of drama, and Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd’s remarks after Game 1 added fuel to the controversy.

Kidd’s assertion that Jaylen Brown is the Boston Celtics’ best player was quickly branded by media and Celtics players as a transparent attempt to sow discord within the opposing locker room.

In an interview with Sam Amick of The Athletic, Kidd emphasized that his intention was not to play “mind games.”

“It wasn’t mind games,“ Kidd said to Amick. “But for whatever reason, everybody took it that way. Everybody was speculating, and no one really asked me that. My whole thing was that watching the Eastern Conference [playoffs], like, he has been [the Celtics’ best player]. No one ever said I was wrong. Even their player said I wasn’t lying.“

Kidd’s statement was largely agreed upon, as Celtics guard Jrue Holiday acknowledged after Game 2 that the comments were “taken out of context.“

Holiday clarified his stance, expressing high regard for Brown and Jayson Tatum, calling them “superstars of the highest order.“

Kidd’s remarks did not rattle the Celtics in Game 2. Boston emerged victorious with a 105-98 win, powered by Tatum’s 18 points and 12 assists and Brown’s 21 points, seven assists and three steals.

The impact of Kidd’s comments might be more psychological than strategic. Mind games are a staple of playoff basketball, and while Kidd denies any motive, the timing and nature of his comment inevitably drew attention.

Fresh off a 13-4 record and an AFC Championship game appearance, the Baltimore Ravens have lofty expectations coming into 2024-2025. For starters, they’re expected to be Super Bowl contenders, as they have +950 odds to make the big game per FanDuel Sportsbook. Baltimore possesses the NFL’s fourth-toughest schedule, and they were projected to finish with 11 wins.

This offseason saw Baltimore sign ex-Titans running back Derrick Henry on a two-year contract. Henry is in the upper tier of running backs as he leads the league in most rushing categories – since 2017, Henry has amassed 9,012 rushing yards and scored 85 rushing touchdowns, living up to his nickname, “King Henry.”

Henry’s signing boosts an already lethal offense as Lamar Jackson is an improviser, and Zay Flowers is a solid first receiver. However, the Ravens lost Odell Beckham Jr. to the Miami Dolphins, and Patrick Queen left for the rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jadeveon Clowney also left the squad and joined the Carolina Panthers. Running backs Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins departed Baltimore, both signed with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will face off for the first time this season in a three-game series at Fenway Park this weekend. This marks a late start to their storied rivalry, thanks to MLB’s new and more balanced schedule that has spread out divisional matchups.

This series will be noteworthy for Alex Verdugo, who will make his first return to Fenway Park after being traded to the Yankees in the offseason. New York acquired Verdugo in exchange for three pitching prospects in a rare transaction between the rivals. The outfielder has posted a solid .261/.317/.432 line with stellar defense in 2024, following a four-year stint with Boston, where he slashed .281/.338/.424.

Verdugo expressed mixed emotions about his return to Fenway, unsure if he will be greeted with cheers or boos from Red Sox fans, “I’m open to whatever they do,” he told MassLive. Reflecting on his time in Boston, Verdugo desired a more aggressive approach at past trade deadlines, especially after the team’s successful 2021 campaign.

“I really loved the organization,” Verdugo said. “I really loved wearing the Red Sox jersey and playing for my teammates. It was more of just wanting to be in a winning atmosphere. When we won in ’21, that was one of the most fun years of my life and it’s because we had a winning team. We went to the ALCS. When you’re winning in Boston, those fans and everything, it feels special out there.”

Verdugo’s comments highlight a period of frustration for Red Sox fans and players alike. In 2022 and 2023, Boston was within striking distance of a wild-card spot at the trade deadlines but made only modest moves. The indecisive approach contributed to the eventual dismissal of lead executive Chaim Bloom last September.

The 2020 trade that brought Verdugo to Boston and Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers placed expectations on him. Despite flashes of brilliance, Verdugo’s tenure displayed inconsistency and issues such as poor baserunning and tardiness, which led to his benching last season.

Since joining the Yankees, Verdugo has avoided such controversies, likely motivated by his impending free agency. During his introductory press conference, he praised Yankees manager Aaron Boone, subtly contrasting Boone’s approach with that of Red Sox manager Alex Cora.

The most prolific coach in recent college basketball history could soon make the jump to the NBA. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday morning that the Los Angeles Lakers are targeting UConn’s Dan Hurley to fill their current coaching vacancy.

Hurley, who has coached the Huskies since 2018, has seen historic success during his short tenure at the University. After completing a short rebuild, he led the team to back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024, becoming the first since former Florida coach Billy Donovan to do so. After demonstrating a superior basketball IQ and rapid adaptation to a changing NIL-driven landscape, he has garnered attention and respect from the entire basketball world.

If he decides to take his talents to the pros, Hurley will join a short list of college coaches who went on to run an NBA squad; from there, he would hope to be a part of an even shorter list who saw success in the league. Of the eight coaches who went from the NCAA to the NBA, it can really only be said that two of them were “successful.”

Following the titles in Gainesville, Donovan joined the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2015 where he coached for five seasons, boasting a win percentage just north of 60% and a playoff berth in each season. He has since served as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, where he has experienced a less memorable tenure, leading the Bulls to just a lone playoff appearance in 2022 and a win percentage under 50% in 3 of 4 seasons since taking over.

More notably, Brad Stevens followed up his Cinderella seasons at Butler and traveled to Boston, where he took over the Celtics’ coaching staff in 2013. He turned the Celtics back into an NBA powerhouse, leading them to the playoffs each year beyond his first season. Following the 2020-21 season, Stevens chose to step down as head coach and has since served as the president of basketball operations for the team.

While Hurley has transformed the UConn basketball program and installed a high level of play, outstanding work ethic and sense of comradery at the college level, history questions whether this effect will translate over to basketball’s biggest stage.  The ability to teach, coach, and lead 18-year-olds who are playing because they love the game of basketball is a very different world than having to control the emotions and personalities of NBA stars, grizzled veterans and young players looking to make a name for themselves.

Many fans would like to think that most NBA players are adaptable and will buy into a coach’s system and style. The reality, however, can be vastly different. NBA players have occasionally made a habit of playing as if they are above the staff around them.  Fans and insiders alike often complain about those who play for the names on the back of the jersey. It’s not completely unjustified to think in such a way.

In the NBA, players’ livelihoods are entirely dependent on what they do on the court; the meaning of team accomplishments can become diluted. Hurley may come to the same realization that many former college coaches have made in the league — they’re no longer in control.  

Hurley’s game plan and execution at UConn was reliant on outsmarting other teams. This is no knock on him or his teams at UConn, but taking a similar approach in professional basketball would be immensely difficult. The vast majority of players Hurley’s hypothetical Lakers would face on any given night in the NBA are better than any player he had to coach against during his tenure at Connecticut. 

If any coach can adapt to this challenge, it’s Hurley, who has come a long way since his days coaching high school ball. Still, it is going to take a lot more than Hurley simply drawing up the X’s and O’s; the players are going to need to buy in and execute them, which is unfortunately not guaranteed in the league’s current state.

The Minnesota Vikings and star wide receiver Justin Jefferson have agreed to a landmark four-year, $140 million contract extension, with $110 million guaranteed. This deal makes Jefferson the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

The contract, which WME Football brokered, includes $88.743 million due at signing. The Vikings announced that Jefferson’s extension will keep him with the team through the 2028 season, although they did not disclose financial details.

“The time has finally come. The deal I’ve been waiting for since I was a little kid,” Jefferson said in an Instagram video. “Being doubted my whole career. Not being highly recruited. Not being the first receiver off the draft board. This whole journey wasn’t easy for me. … To be given a gift to play football at the highest level is a blessing. It’s an honor.”

Jefferson’s $110 million guaranteed money sets a new benchmark for comprehensive receiver contracts, surpassing other top earners like A.J. Brown and Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Vikings owners Mark and Zygi Wilf expressed their enthusiasm about the deal. “Justin has earned this contract, and we are thrilled he will remain a Minnesota Viking for a very long time,“ they said in a statement. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah praised Jefferson’s impact on and off the field. “He is the living embodiment of our culture with his joyful dedication to process and our goals. We couldn’t be more excited for Justin and his family.”

The agreement comes after Jefferson declined a previous contract offer from the Vikings that would have paid him over $28 million annually. By betting on himself, Jefferson secured a deal with an average annual value of $35 million, surpassing the previous non-quarterback record held by San Francisco 49ers’ Nick Bosa.

Since being drafted 22nd overall by the Vikings in 2020, Jefferson has amassed 392 receptions for 5,899 yards and 30 touchdowns. His 98.3 receiving yards per game is the highest average in NFL history for any career span, and he holds the record for the most receiving yards in the first three seasons of a career with 4,825.

“Justin is an exceptionally talented player and an incredible person that I am honored to coach and have as a team captain,“ Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell told ESPN. “His positive energy and love for the game shows up daily as he works to be the best at his craft.”

The Vikings are ready for a new era of offensive prowess, having replaced quarterback Kirk Cousins with free agent Sam Darnold and first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy this offseason. Despite missing games due to injury last season, Jefferson’s exceptional performance solidifies his role as a cornerstone of the Vikings’ future.

Jefferson was the fifth receiver selected in the 2020 draft. It quickly proved his versatility and talent, making him an invaluable asset to the Vikings and setting the stage for continued success in the years to come.
