The Vancouver Canucks snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night.
Alexandre Burrows put Vancouver up 3-2 at 9:21 of the third period and Sven Baertschi scored the game-winner at 13:08 to back goalie Jacob Markstrom’s 23 saves and give the Canucks their first win since Oct. 20.
Baertschi and Burrows each scored his first goal of the season, and the latter added an empty-net goal. Loui Eriksson scored his first goal with Vancouver (5-8-1). Henrik Sedin netted his fifth of the season.
The Rangers (10-4-) ended a five-game losing streak, scoring at least five goals in each game. New York took a 1-0 lead on Pavel Buchnevich’s goal at 7:20 of the first period, although their advantage lasted less than eight minutes and they never regained it.

Rick Nash scored his 400th NHL goal. Buchnevich also had two assists and Mika Zibanejad scored.
“Nobody even had a ‘C’ game tonight,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said.
Rangers goalie Antti Raanta started and finished the game, but Henrik Lundqvist took the loss after relieving Raanta due to concussion testing protocol with 11:33 remaining in the third period, when it was still tied 2-2.
Raanta was hit by Vancouver forward Markus Granlund at 4:27 of the third and had his head snap back. He continued playing for the next four minutes, but was then pulled for concussion testing.
Lundqvist allowed goals to Burrows and Baertschi before Raanta returned with 5:14 remaining and the Canucks leading 4-2.
“That’s the rule nowadays and you have to respect that,” Raanta said. “I fell down and they saw that I hit my head on the ice, so that’s one of those things that they’re looking for.
“I felt good.”
Vigneault didn’t blame the loss on losing Raanta, however.
“Our execution was non-existent,” Vigneault said. “We couldn’t make a 10-foot pass. When you execute like that and you can’t pass, you can’t put your speed on display. We didn’t deserve to win. It’s that simple.”
Burrows scored off a scramble in the crease. Baertschi scored the winner following a 2-on-1 rush by finishing with a one-timer off a pass from Jack Skille.
Sedin gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead at 2:29 of the third period. Nash tied it with a power-play goal at 5:27.
New York gained a 1-0 lead on Buchnevich’s goal. Eriksson scored at 15:18, just 3:30 after he hit the crossbar.
The Canucks will next visit the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, while the Rangers will visit the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
