Update: The Carolina Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton stated, “Cam does have two transverse process fractures in his lower back but no other internal injuries. He’ll stay overnight but there are no more tests scheduled, and that’s it.” Now, if that injury sounds familiar, it is the same fracture that Dallas Cowboys’ QB Tony Romo has played with this season — he only missed one game. At the moment, there is no word about whether or not Cam will be able to play in Sunday’s bout against the Buccaneers.
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was involved in a two car accident on Church Street bridge over I-277 near Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Observer. There are reports that the quarterback’s car flipped, but he was allegedly not seriously injured in the accident: according to Steve Crump of WBTV, “a CMPD source says no injuries to Cam Newton. He did not want to be transported, [but] taken to hospital as a precaution.”
In fact, there have been live tweets from the scene of the accident showing Newton conscious and smiling, as well as being loaded into the ambulance. At the moment, we can only verify that he did not suffer any life-threatening injuries, but are unsure if the QB will be okay to play on Sunday.

Either way, the accident still looked pretty dire: with initial pictures showing Newton’s truck needing to be flipped back on its tires, as well as a photo of medics working on the QB.
As for the Panthers, they have released a statement regarding the incident: “We are closely monitoring the situation of a car wreck involving Cam Newton. We will have more information at an appropriate time.” The NFC South team is currently 4-8-1, yet with both the Falcons and Saints losing this weekend, there playoff hopes are still alive. At the same time, they would need to beat the Buccaneers on Sunday, if they have any hope to make the playoffs: and obviously Newton is a vital piece to their game plan.
