The Bills last season took a big step forward going 10-6 and making it to the playoffs, despite blowing a lead to the Houston Texans in the Wildcard Round. The reason for the Bills success starts with the development of Josh Allen in what was then his second year. Their defense also performed really well with guys like Tre’Davious White, Jerry Hughes, Lorenzo Alexander, Tremaine Edmunds and others. The Bills also added Stefon Diggs in the offseason to give Allen another weapon on offense and with the departure of Tom Brady from the Patriots, the Bills are the clear frontrunner to win the AFC East.

Looking at the Bills schedule, there are some things that jump off the page. The first being despite being the odds on favorite to win the AFC East, they are going to have to earn it, especially in the second half of the season. Following their bye, they have tough games on the road at San Francisco and Denver in Weeks 13 and 15, which could be the difference in seeding and if whoever is second in the AFC East is playing well. Also after their bye, they play the Chargers, Steelers and Dolphins, although all those games are at home, they won’t necessarily be cake walks. Looking at the games prior to their bye, the fact that they play Tennessee and Kansas City in back-to-back weeks, especially since the Kansas City game on a short week playing on Thursday after playing on the road in Tennessee. They also play Seattle and Arizona in back-to-back weeks will be a challenge as both of those teams are improved from a year ago and are arguably better than the Bills on paper.

If I were planning on making the trip to Western New York (or any city that the Bills are playing in for that matter), these are the five games I would suggest going to:

  • Week 5: Bills at Titans
  • Week 6: Chiefs at Bills
  • Week 9: Seahawks at Bills
  • Week 13: Bills at 49ers
  • Week 15: Bills at Broncos

Each of these games will be challenges for Buffalo in different ways. With the game against the Titans, they have Derrick Henry, who led the NFL in rushing last season which will test the Bills in run defense. The Chiefs have a dynamic passing game led by Patrick Mahomes which will test the Bills pass rush and secondary. Seattle is one of those teams that is very balanced on both sides of the ball, which will force the Bills to be disciplined and stay the course if their game plan goes awry. The 49ers with their pass rush will test the Bills offensive line. The Broncos’ offense, at least on paper, looks to be very good both in the air, and running the ball, which will test the Bills’ defensive play calling. All five of these games will be crucial for the Bills success this season, especially if they want to make noise in the playoffs.
