It’s the land of the rich and the famous so it only makes sense that the Los Angeles Rams would pay tribute to their city by designing Super Bowl LVI rings to hold the most ever carat weight in the history of sports championship rings.

The Rams finally received their rings in a Thursday night ceremony after beating the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in February.

“To be able to not only win the Super Bowl, but also to do it in the house Mr. Kroenke built, is really a dream come true,” Rams vice president of football and business affairs Tony Pastoors said in a statement. “We are grateful to Jason and his team for their creativity and passion to deliver a championship ring that reflects our team and their historic season, the one-of-a-kind stadium where it happened, and the city that inspired all of it.”

The players, including Aaron Donald, Von Miller, Jalen Ramsey and Odell Beckham Jr., had a big part in the design process as they partnered with L.A. jeweler Jason Arasheben of Jason of Beverly Hills.

The rings feature the team logo in blue and yellow sapphires with the Lombardi trophy and palm trees in the background. The top of the ring is removable and reveals an aerial view of SoFi Stadium as the Rams won the big game on their home turf. The miniature-sized field features remnants of the stadium’s turf. To make it even better, the underside of the top is covered by the piece of a football used in the game.

The ring included more significant numbers from the Rams’ journey to the Super Bowl. The columns on the ring are made of .23 carat diamonds to signify the 23 points the Rams scored to beat the Bengals. January 12 is also an important date that was honored on the ring with 1.12 carat round diamonds. The date is the day in 2016 the team was approved to move to L.A., the day head coach Sean McVay was hired in 2017 and the date of their first playoff victory since returning to the City of Angels in 2019.

Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson announced on Sunday that he will no longer go by the nickname “AR-15” or use it for branding purposes.

The moniker, which combines his initials and jersey number, is also the name of the assault rifle used in mass shootings including the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers in May.

The Gators quarterback released a statement explaining his decision.

“After discussions with my family and much thought, I have decided to no longer use the nickname ‘AR-15’ and the current apparel line logo, which features a scope reticle, as part of my branding,” the statement read. “White a nickname is only a nickname and ‘AR-15’ was simply a representation of my initials combined with my jersey number, it is important to me that my name and brand are no longer associated with the assault rifle that has been used in mass shootings, which I do not condone in any way or form. My representatives and I are currently working on rebranding, which includes the creation of a new logo and transition to simply using ‘AR’ and my name, Anthony Richardson.”

Richardson, who is going into his redshirt sophomore season, backed up starter Emory Jones last year. Despite playing off the bench and dealing with a knee injury late in the season, Richardson contributed by throwing for six passing touchdowns and adding three more on the ground. Richardson is expected to take over starting duties for the Gators as Jones transferred to Arizona State earlier this year.

Cameron Smith posted a near-perfect closing round at St. Andrews that included five straight birdies on the back nine to beat out Cameron Young and the favorite Rory McIlroy.

“All the names on there, every player that’s been at the top of their game has won this championship,” Smith, 28, told reporters following his British Open win. “It’s pretty cool to be on there. It really hasn’t sunk in yet. I don’t think it will for a few weeks. Yeah, it’s just unreal.”

Under pressure, Smith was flawless. He posted eight-under 64 in the final round, which is good for the lowest final round by a champion at St. Andrews ever.

Young came in second one shot behind Smith.

With the win, the Australian golfer moves up to No. 2 in the world behind only Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.

McIlroy, who had been poised to break his eight-year majors drought in front of a home crowd, struggled to putt early. The four-time major champion before the age of 25, who joins Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus in that category, has finished in the top 10 of 17 majors since 2015 but has failed to win one.

He congratulated Smith on his big win.

“The putter went cold on me,” McIlroy said. “When both Camerons – especially Smith – went on that run on the back nine, I had to dig deep to make birdies. And I just couldn’t. I got beaten by the better player this week. To go out and shoot 64 to win the Open Championship at St. Andrews is a hell of a showing. Hats off to Cam.”

Two-time UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was denied bail for the third time last week in an attempted murder trial.

Judge Shelyna Brown upheld her previous rulings in which she said Velasquez’s actions showed he had a “reckless disregard for human life.”

Velasquez allegedly attempted to murder Harry Goularte, who is currently facing charges of child molestation following accusations of molesting Velasquez’s four-year-old son. Velasquez chased down Goularte and shot at the car Goularte and his stepfather were in back in February. His stepfather was struck by a bullet.

Velasquez has been in prison ever since, though Goularte pleaded not guilty and was released on bail.

If Velasquez is convicted, he will face a minimum of 20 years and up to life in prison. He is expected back in court on August 5 for a motion hearing.

The Philadelphia Eagles made a shocking acquisition on Draft night: a wide receiver … from the Tennesee Titans.

The Eagles acquired star receiver A.J. Brown, 24, who was in the final year of his rookie contract in Nashville, by trading out of their 18th and 101st overall picks. Brown’s four-year deal is good for $100 million with $57 million guaranteed. His new contract makes him the fourth-highest paid receiver in the league averaging $25 million per year, coming in after Tyreek Hill ($30M), Davante Adams ($28M) and DeAndre Hopkins ($27.25M).

Brown has emerged as one of the NFL’s most promising young talents. He was drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2019 Draft and has totaled 2,995 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns over the past three seasons.

The Titians used the 18th pick to select Brown’s potential replacement, Treylon Burks out of Arkansas and will use the 101st pick to draft another player in the third round on Friday night.

Former National Basketball Players Association vice president and current Utah Jazz assistant coach Keyon Dooling was arrested Wednesday for illegally collecting $2.5 million from the NBA’s health and welfare benefit plan.

Dooling personally pocketed $350,000 from the scheme and recruited others to join.

The Department of Justice released a transcript of a text exchange with a co-conspirator demonstrating his role in the defrauding of the NBA’s benefits program.

The Jazz said they were made aware of the situation by Dooling on Wednesday.

“It is a case concerning his time at the National Basketball Players Association, prior to him joining our organization,” the Jazz said in a statement. “He has been put on paid administrative leave. Due to the ongoing legal process, we will refrain from further comment.”

The Jazz play Game 6 in the first round of the playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks in Utah on Thursday. The Mavs have the advantage as the winners of three games in the series.

It’s true. Tom Brady is retiring.

After back-and-forth reports over the weekend, Brady made his retirement official on Instagram Tuesday morning saying that he could no longer make the competitive commitment that football requires.

“I have loved my NFL career,” Brady wrote. “Now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

He thanked the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization, players, coaches, family and friends.

In a career that spanned 22 seasons that included seven Super Bowl titles, he leaves the field as who many consider the greatest of all time. Brady spent 20 years with the New England Patriots after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, before joining the Buccaneers for a 2-year stint, which brought his final Super Bowl win last year.

Brady retires as a three-time league MVP, five-time Super Bowl MVP, the league leader in passing yards (84,520), touchdown passes (624), wins (243) and playoff wins (35). He also made the NFL All-Decade Teams of the 2000s and 2010s.

As for his plans for life after retiring from the NFL, he’s still unsure.

“Exactly what my days will look like will be a work-in-progress,” Brady wrote in the statement. “As I said earlier, I am going to take it day by day. I know for sure I want to spend a lot of time giving to others and trying to enrich other people’s lives, just as so many have done for me.”

Brady was loved by the lucky fans who had him as their quarterback and hated by everyone else because he was great. So, when the 2022 season begins in September, an NFL season will start for the first time in this decade without the greatest of all time, Tom Brady.

Jason Brown, 27, is an American figure skater. He became one of the youngest figure skaters to win a medal after Team USA won bronze in the team event in Sochi in 2014. After failing to qualify for the 2018 Olympics, Brown was burnt out. In the last four years, he has been through a personal journey, coming out as gay last June. He uses his platform to voice his support of love in all forms. During the last few years, he also re-fell in love with skating and the process that got him to Sochi. Now, he’s back and looking to add another medal to his collection in Beijing.

Becky Hammon is returning to the WNBA, this time as head coach of the Las Vegas Aces. The five-year deal will make her the highest-paid coach in the league.

The move comes as a surprise as Hammon was expected to be up for multiple head coaching vacancies in the NBA. She is currently in her eighth season under Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, which is where she became the first full-time female assistant coach in NBA history. She was a finalist for the Portland Trailblazers‘ head coaching position last summer, but Chauncey Billups was hired instead.

Hammon was undrafted out of Colorado State in 1999, but soon made a name for herself as a member of the New York Liberty from 1999 to 2006. She then spent eight more seasons with the San Antonio Silver Stars. Hammon will now return to the organization. The Silver Stars moved to Vegas in 2018. During her 16 seasons, she was a six-time WNBA All-Star and helped lead her teams to four WNBA Finals appearances.

When Hammon takes over, likely in April as she will finish out her season with the Spurs, she inherits one of the most talented rosters in the league. 2020 MVP A’ja Wilson is one of the best young players in the league at 25. Dearica Hamby and Kelsey Plum are both winners of the Sixth Player of the Year, awarded to the best player coming off the bench and former No. 1 pick, Jackie Young is also on the roster. Last season, the team finished first in the west but lost in the Conference Finals to the Phoenix Mercury. While the team has done well, they’ve struggled to score when it mattered most.

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer got 4 1/2 gallons of mayonnaise dumped on him after the game, but to Beamer, the price that came with the 38-21 victory over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl was worth it.

“I got hammered in the back of the head from the cooler — and then came the mayo,” Beamer said. “I may have a concussion. It was awful.”

He changed his shirt for the postgame press conference.

“I still have mayo in my pockets,” he joked.

He was proud of his team for fighting, even though the team was missing key faces.

“I don’t know how many scholarship defensive backs we were missing,” Beamer said. “R.J. Roderick and Jaylan Foster literally had to play every single play (at safety). Darius Rush and Marcellas Dial literally played every single play at corner because we were so, so thin in the secondary.”

Jaheim Bell hauled in five catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns. The running game was propelled by Kevin Harris who rushed for 169 yards rushing and another score. South Carolina averaged 11.6 yards per play. Dakereon Joyner, a wide receiver converted quarterback, was the MVP of the game. He completed 9-of-9 passes for 160 yards and added 64 yards on the ground. Joyner never would’ve guessed that he would find so much success passing the ball, especially since he hadn’t played the quarterback position in a game since 2019.

“I’m so thankful,” said Joyner. “I thank God for everything, for Him just preparing me the last four years for this moment. I never question God. What I say to other people: Never give up on your dreams. If you’ve ever got something out there that you want to get, keep going. Never give up. Adversity is going to come, but it’s how you overcome it.”

South Carolina earned a bowl appearance with a 7-6 record and this game was a nice way to end the season, especially after being shut out 30-0 by the Clemson Tigers in the last game of the regular season.

So, to end the season with a Bowl game win and a mayonnaise bath was worth it, because as the famous Michael Jordan saying goes: Winning has a price.

If a name and face became synonymous with the Pittsburgh Steelers, it would be Ben Roethlisberger‘s. The quarterback is in his 18th season with the team and acknowledges this could be his last year.

“I don’t ever speak in definites or guarantees, that’s just not what I’ve ever done or who I am,” Roethlisberger said, according to Pro Football Talk. “But looking at the bigger picture, I would say that all signs are pointing to this could be it. Regular season, that is — I know we still have a chance to potentially get a playoff game there if things fall our way and we take care of business and things have to happen. But in the grand scheme of things, in terms of the regular season, signs are pointing that way, this could be it.”

Roethlisberger was drafted in 2004 and led the Steelers to two Super Bowl wins.

This year, the Steelers are 7-7-1. The wild card race is extremely competitive, but securing a playoff spot is not out of the question.

“I’ve been so blessed to play in front of the best fans in all of sports at the best venue, and what better way to have a last potential regular-season game than Monday Night Football against a division opponent. It’s just special. So, the long-winded answer is I got a lot of focus on still for this year and this game, and that’s got to be it right now.”

It has been speculated for a long time that this year would be Roethlisberger’s final year since his arm strength has noticeably declined. Former teammate Ryan Shazier said publically that he thinks the game will tell Roethlisberger when it’s time and that time could be soon. As for Roethlisberger, he’s focused on the upcoming game.

“I’ll address the definite answer for that at some point down the road,” the quarterback said Thursday. “But like I said, my focus is winning this game. If it is indeed my last regular-season game here, it’s going to be one of the most important games of my career.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers are acquiring veteran guard Rajon Rondo from the Los Angeles Lakers after losing Ricky Rubio for the season with a torn ACL. The Lakers receive Denzel Valentine in the deal, but will likely waive him and open a roster spot.

The Cavs are 20-14 and sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The Rubio injury is a hit for a team that is already missing Collin Sexton, who is out for the season with a meniscus tear in his right knee. The team also just plays much better when Rubio’s on the court. He played in every game this season and averaged 13.1 points, 6.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game. The Cavs will miss his leadership, too.

“I think this team is so close, so it’s like an extended family member goes down and it just pains you,” Cavaliers’ forward Kevin Love said of Rubio’s injury. “It just hurts to see anyone go down, but especially a guy like Ricky, who has been so consistent for us and brings so much to this team for so many different reasons.”

By the numbers, the improved Cavs team can be good without Rubio. Without him on the floor, they’re still the fourth-ranked defense, and their offense still has the potential to be in the top 10. According to Tankathon, the Cavs also have the easiest remaining schedule.

Rondo is 35 and in his 16th season. He likely won’t be able to match Rubio’s production, as he averaged just 3.1 points and 3.7 assists in 16 minutes per game with the Lakers, but his experience and leadership should benefit a young Cavs team whose best players are early on in their career. He is a two-time NBA Champion and four-time NBA All-Star.

Rondo entered COVID protocol on Sunday and will have to be cleared before joining the Cavaliers.

Covid-19 has ravaged the NBA, and another game will have to be postponed. The game between the Denver Nuggets and the Golden State Warriors, meant to be played last night, will have to wait after the Nuggets did not have the eight healthy players required for a game. This is the eleventh game the NBA has postponed for COVID reasons.

Warriors forward Draymond Green voiced his frustrations on Twitter.

“How do you continue to cancel games when you’ve implemented rules to prevent this from happening?” Green said. “Is that not a competitive advantage for other teams? The guys we didn’t have due to the protocol list played no role in Tuesday’s loss? Pick a side but don’t straddle the fence.”

Green’s insinuation that the Nuggets 89-86 win on Tuesday was unfair came from the fact that the Warriors weren’t at full strength either – they also had key players in Covid protocol including Green himself and point guard Jordan Poole. Green also argued that the Nuggets have an advantage when the game is made up since it would likely add a back-to-back game on the Warriors schedule.

“So when the game is rescheduled (which will probably take a day away from our “break”), we will play them at full strength… But they got to sneak a win when we weren’t at full strength, only two days ago??? Let’s make it make some sense here.”

The Nuggets are without coach Michael Malone, two assistant coaches, forwards Jeff Green and Zeke Nnaji, guard Bones Hyland. This adds to the eight players that were already out due to injury and non-COVID-related illnesses.

The Nuggets are scheduled to play the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center tomorrow while next up for the Warriors is tomorrow night’s game against the Utah Jazz.

The Russell Wilson era in Seattle could be coming to a close with the Seahawks sitting at 5-10 going into their last home game of the season. They play the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

“I know for me personally, I hope it’s not my last game. But at the same time, I know it won’t be my last game in the NFL,” Wilson said on Pro Football Talk. “I’m just focused on today and getting better today. That’s my goal. I love this city and I love this moment. I love these guys and we gotta make sure we get better today. That’s all that matters.”

While Wilson says he hopes to stay in Seattle, reports are that Wilson is open to joining another team. Wilson still has two years left on his contract, but Seattle might go into a complete rebuild. Bobby Wagner, who was drafted with Wilson in 2012 and has been just as crucial to the defense as Wilson has been to the offense was also asked about his future with the team.

“You think about it,” Wagner said. “You think about what the next year looks like and what the future holds because this was a season that I don’t think we all planned for. We didn’t plan for the season to go this way, so obviously there’s going to be some changes and whether or not I’m part of those changes, I don’t know.”

Wilson and Wagner led the team to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances which resulted in the 2014 championship.

If Wagner were to be let go, it would be due to the $20.35 million he’ll count against the Seahawks’ salary cap next season. Wilson has made it clear he is unhappy with some things in the Seahawks’ organization, so there would probably have to be changes made there if he were to stay. As far as trades go, Wilson’s contract includes a no-trade clause which allows him to decline a trade proposal if he doesn’t think it would be a good fit.

The Seahawks have been plagued by injuries and affected by COVID this season. They’re 2-5 in one-score games.

Bishop Sycamore High School was supposed to have a top-tier football program, but as they were clobbered 58-0 by IMG Academy in a nationally televised game by ESPN, questions surrounding the results’ legitimacy were raised.

An investigation was launched and found that Bishop Sycamore is a scam, and does not meet the requirements to be labeled an “educational institution” in the state of Ohio. In the 41-page report by the Ohio Department of Education, it says that they were unable to find proof of location, teachers or even enrolled students.

“Ohio families should be able to count on the fact that our schools educate students and don’t exist in name only as a vehicle to play high school sports,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in a written statement Friday.

Legally, Bishop Sycamore was identified as a “non-chartered, non-tax-supported school,” which the ODE doesn’t have oversight over because schools under that label are normally allowed to do things differently due to sincerely held religious beliefs. The ODE could not assess whether or not Bishop Sycamore had those beliefs.

After the 58-0 loss, Bishop Sycamore’s head coach, Ron Johnson was fired. Their new coach Tyren Jackson, seemed to know exactly what kind job he was accepting. He told NBC4 that Bishop Sycamore is not a school.

“That’s not what Bishop Sycamore is, and I think that’s what the biggest misconception about us was, and that was our fault,” Jackson said. “Because that was a mistake on paperwork.”

Jackson did not seem to have previous knowledge that the “school” was registered as a school.

The investigation concluded that Bishop Sycamore was “a way for students to play football against high school teams and potentially increase students’ prospects of playing football at the collegiate level.”

Since the ODE does not have oversight over schools like this, they don’t have the right to penalize Bishop Sycamore for their actions.

Every school slated to play Bishop Sycamore has pulled out in recent days.

Jaden Rashada of Pittsburgh, California is the first high school football player to profit from endorsements since the NCAA changed their rules this summer. Previously, Rashada would not have been able to play collegiately if he accepted money from endorsements. He is be making a four-figure sum to promote the “Athletes In Recruitment” app, by posting on social media.

“It feels pretty good,” Rashada told ESPN. “Maybe it can open up more opportunities for others and people can be more aware of it. It’s a blessing to be able to make some money and promote a good brand.”

James Sackville, AIR’s founder and former punter at SMU, created the app last year to help streamline the recruitment process for athletes, anyone who is advising them and college coaches.

“There’s no better person to talk about recruiting than someone who has recently gone through the process or is currently going through the process,” Sackville said. “It’s been a resounding success so far, and after talking with Jaden it was a literal no-brainer to work with him.”

California is one of five states that allow high schoolers to make money off endorsements, and Rashada says he made sure to do his research to understand what was allowed in California. He also retained an adviser, Ethan Weinstein, to help him.

Rashada is currently ranked in the top 5 quarterbacks, and is the best dual-threat quarterback, in the 2023 recruiting class. He hasn’t committed to a college yet but told ESPN that he will not make his decision based on where he can make the most money of NIL deals. Offers have already come in from Auburn, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Penn State, UCLA and Oregon.

Last week, Llaneros Football Club played Union Magdalena SA for a chance to move up to the top league. A win would be enough to promote Magdalena, but Llaneros needed a win and five goals because of the goal difference. It seemed like Llaneros would win after taking a late lead, but fell after conceding two goals in six minutes of extra time. One of the goals saw a Magdalena player score nearly unchallenged. Following the game, Llaneros and its’ players received criticism for throwing the match from fans, announcers and even the president of Colombia, Iván Duque. The president of the Colombian professional football league is opening an investigation.

Jorge Duván Mosquera, one of the Llaneros defenders who appeared to stop trying, released a video on social media.

“We fear for our own lives: me and my teammates are scared to go out,” Mosquera said. “We fear something might happen to us on the street.”

The situation is reminiscent of the 1990s and another football scandal in Colombia. Athletes received death threats from drug cartels who had sway in Colombian professional football. Colombia lost 2-1 to the U.S. in the World Cup. Colombian football player Andrés Escobar was shot at a nightclub just days following the loss, seemingly for scoring Colombia’s lone goal.

Llaneros coach Walter Aristizábal also denies throwing the match and offers a different perspective on the loss.

“We compete at the highest level, created lots of opportunities that we did not take advantage of,” Aristizábal said. “For us, what was fatal was the minute when they scored and drew with us. I insist that the emotional part is difficult to handle, when they scored, we’d have to score five more to overturn the result, and what can we do with that? We are now focused to prepare the next league and fight for promotion next year.”

The NBA and the player’s association have announced that they will allow teams that are missing players because they are taking part in following the league’s Covid-19 protocol to sign replacements. This memo released by the NBA and NBPA went into effect yesterday and will last until January 19 when the league will reevaluate and decide the next steps.

The memo states that a team will be allowed to sign at least one new player for every two positive tests. A team can sign two new players for three positive tests, and at least three players for four or more positive tests.

The signings will not be counted against a team’s salary cap or affect their luxury tax payment.

This allowance will especially help teams, like the Brooklyn Nets, who are experiencing an outbreak. They have 10 players, which is the most in the league, in COVID protocol so they could sign up to 10 players and no less than three players before the January 19 deadline.

The NBA will also enforce an additional testing protocol effective on December 26.

Scott Spina, of New Jersey, has pleaded guilty to impersonating a Patriots player to get “family and friends” Super Bowl rings.

He messaged an ex-Patriots player, referred to in court documents as “T.J.,” in 2017 asking to buy his Super Bowl ring. He gave T.J a hot check to acquire the ring and the player’s username and password to access a website that sells “family and friends” rings. 

He sold T.J.’s ring for $63,000 to a well-known sports memorabilia broker. Spina then told the ring company that he knew Tom Brady‘s baby and wanted to get three rings engraved with Brady’s name on it as a gift.

He told the same broker that the rings had been gifts to Brady’s nephews. The buyer ended up backing out after growing suspicious about Brady having three nephews and that the geotags of the photos Spina sent him were located in New Jersey rather than Massachusetts.

Spina instead sold the rings to an auction house for $100,000. The auction house sold one of the rings for $337,000.

“By pretending to be a New England Patriots player, the defendant was able to get Super Bowl rings from the company that issued them,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Erik Silber said. “But in offering the rings for sale, he was also selling their connection to Tom Brady — a story that simply did not hold up on close scrutiny.”

Spina has agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud, mail fraud and aggravated identity theft, per the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

Spina’s court date is set for January 31 in Los Angeles.

Williams‘ helmet hit directly on Chris Godwin‘s knee. After tests, initial results came back saying it was a sprained MCL, but further investigation into the injury proved that Godwin’s ACL was torn. Bruce Arians announced the news on Monday.

Godwin finished the season with 1,103 yards and five touchdowns on 98 receptions.

Tom Brady took to the Let’s Go podcast to voice his frustration with hits like the one that ended Godwin’s season.

“Chris got hit in the knees yesterday, which is a play that I think they ought to take out of the game of football from a receiver standpoint,” Brady said. “I’ve seen that hit too many times, where a defenseless pass catcher is in the process of catching a ball, then he’s hit by the defender. A lot of the defenders will say, ‘Well, we can’t hit them in the head anymore.’ Well, the point is, you can’t hit anyone in the head anymore and you can’t hit anyone in the knees anymore, except for receivers. You can still hit them in the knees, which doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Brady said he plans to take to the rules competition committee in the offseason.

Arians agrees with him.

“We’re so concerned about hitting people in the head, that we’re getting a lot of knee injuries now because of that type of tackle,” Arians said. “Totally legal but I think that’s one of the things we have to look into in the offseason.”

Godwin is not just important as one of Brady’s favorite targets, he’s an excellent blocker, too.
