 This fight had first been rumored to take place more than a year ago. However, UFC president Dana White said in March that the organization was still “nowhere close” to having the matchup finalized.

White also revealed at the time that McGregor — who has had several legal issues in recent years due to violent incidents — was aching for a lightweight title rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov. McGregor lost to Nurmagomedov via fourth-round submission at UFC 229 in October 2018. The 31-year-old Irishman served a six-month suspension due to his involvement in an altercation that happened after the event.

Former kickboxer Cerrone passed Michael Bisping and Georges St-Pierre for the most wins in UFC history in November 2018 with 21, so McGregor will certainly have his work cut out for him at UFC 246.

McGregor and Cerrone have a combined 28 knockout victories between them, so their upcoming fight will likely be a very captivating one. McGregor mainly relies on his hands for offense during fights, while Cerrone tends to follow a more traditional Muay Thai-like strategy for strikes and often uses jabs. His head kick is also famous for being deadly, so he’s expected to use it against an opponent as fierce as McGregor.

Defending champions Clemson are back in the CFP game for the fourth time in the last five years. During that time span, the Tigers played fellow powerhouse Alabama three times and defeated the Crimson Tide twice (in 2019 and 2017). In 2016, Alabama won the title game 45-40.

Meanwhile, LSU is playing in its very first CFP, so this year’s game should be exciting.

Clemson recently beat Ohio State in the final moments of the 2019 Fiesta Bowl, while LSU reached the CFP by routing Oklahoma 63-28 in the Peach Bowl. The Buckeyes beat Oregon in the 2015 CFP title game, the first year the contest was held.

Clemson is led by star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who is believed to be the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick in 2021. He has logged 36 passing touchdowns (for fifth in the country) and 3,431 yards this season. Meanwhile, LSU’s 6-foot-4, 216-pound signal caller Joe Burrow is first in the nation in passing touchdowns with 55 and is second in total yards with 5,208. He needs just three more TDs to tie the FBS record for a single season. Burrow is expected to be a top NFL draft pick this year.

Given that Clemson is on a 29-game winning streak, including 25-0 with Lawrence starting, the Tigers have much to feel confident about heading into this year’s CFP title game.

A Boston Celtics fan was thrown out of TD Garden and arrested on Wednesday after he tossed a beer can in the direction of the San Antonio Spurs bench.

The incident occurred during a stoppage of play in the third quarter of the Celtics’ 129-114 loss. Boston guard Kemba Walker was ejected after drawing consecutive technical fouls. Walker began contesting a no-call of a foul on Spurs star LaMarcus Aldridge.

According to local television station WCVB5, police identified the fan as 22-year-old Everett, Massachusetts native Justin Arnold. Arnold was charged with disturbing a public assembly.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens reportedly apologized to his Spurs counterpart Gregg Popovich for the fan’s behavior following the matchup and added he hoped the young man would never be allowed to come to any NBA game again.

Several Celtics players also said they condoned the fan’s behavior.

“I love our fans, love the passion that they bring. They certainly bring a lot of energy, but we’ve got to try to stay away from that,” said Gordon Hayward.

Video footage of the incident shows a beer can flying from the stands behind the Spurs’ bench and landing by the feet of one of San Antonio’s players. The can was not empty, so the court’s floor had to be wiped down before play continued.

Alvin Gentry was not pleased at all on Monday night after a no-call from the referees as time expired led to his New Orleans Pelicans sustaining a 128-126 loss to the Utah Jazz in regulation.

In the final seconds of the game, New Orleans forward Brandon Ingram snagged a rebound from an attempted 3-pointer from Bojan Bogdanovic and three Pelicans immediately called for a timeout: Gentry and guards Lonzo Ball and JJ Reddick. The officials did not grant a timeout and Ingram raced down the court to face Jazz center Rudy Gobert. 

Gobert — the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year — jumped up and his left arm touched Ingram’s right arm. A foul call would have forced overtime, but instead, the referees signaled that the contest was over after they reviewed the clock due to a potential malfunction. The officials — who reportedly claimed they weren’t allowed to retroactively call a foul per NBA rules — were heavily booed by Pelicans fans at Smoothie King Center, and Gentry expressed in no uncertain terms after the game how upset he was with the no-call.

“All we did was exactly what we were supposed to do — took the ball, drove it hard at the basket — and then they determined it wasn’t a foul,” Gentry said, per ESPN. “End of game.”

Ingram told reporters after the game that he didn’t believe Gobert’s contact made any difference on the final outcome.

“I don’t really think it matters what I saw,” Ingram said. “The referee seen something different.”

New Orleans faced a similar situation last month in a 108-101 overtime loss against the Brooklyn Nets. The Pelicans might have won that game in regulation after Brooklyn committed a shot-clock violation with less than 3 seconds left that the officials didn’t penalize.

The Pelicans (12-25), who are second-to-last in the Western Conference, next host the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers reached a deal to hire Baylor’s Matt Rhule as their new head coach, it was reported Tuesday.

According to ESPN, 44-year-old Rhule had been speculated to join either the Panthers or the New York Giants, who recently fired head coach Pat Shurmur. Just last month, Rhule reportedly said he hoped to return to Baylor. He will now replace Ron Rivera, who was fired this year following a nine-year tenure with the Panthers.  The news concerning Rhule follows the Dallas Cowboys’ hiring of former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Monday.

Rhule helped the Baylor Bears significantly improve their football team during his three-season stint with the team. Baylor finished the 2017 season 1-11 but went 11-3 in 2019 and also had a winning season in 2018. Carolina will now hope Rhule can do the same for them. The Panthers — who appeared in the Super Bowl 50 four years ago but lost to the Denver Broncos — failed to reach the playoffs this year after finishing 5-11 and fourth in the NFC South. Carolina is also hoping to land one of several new free-agent quarterbacks — like Ryan Tannehill, Teddy Bridgewater or Tom Brady — in the wake of Cam Newton‘s season-ending foot injury, which he suffered early last month.

Rhule, a former linebacker at Penn State, also formerly served as an assistant coach at Temple University and coached the Giants’ offensive line in 2012.

The Panthers and Giants had also both reportedly interviewed New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for a head coaching position.

This year’s national championship game will of course be held on Feb. 2 at the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The 2020 Super Bowl will also feature a pre-game beach party called ‘Gronk Beach’ hosted by former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski the day before the big matchup.

Although the playoffs have not yet begun, several teams are already listed as favorites to reach this year’s Super Bowl. OddsShark (and several other predicting websites) most recently named the 12-2 Baltimore Ravens as the favorites to appear in Super Bowl LIV. The Ravens — who are led by MVP frontrunner quarterback Lamar Jackson — clinched the AFC North last week by beating the New York Jets 42-21. Among the other teams who could also make a run for the Super Bowl are the Kansas City Chiefs (11-3) — who have been the only team besides Baltimore and Houston to defeat the domineering, Tom Brady-led New England Patriots this season — the Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks, the New Orleans Saints, the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers.

Drew Brees is now officially the all-time NFL touchdown passes leader.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback surpassed Peyton Manning‘s record for career TD passes in Monday night’s 34-7 home rout of the Indianapolis Colts. Brees — who will be 41 next month — beat Manning by throwing his 540th NFL pass midway through the third quarter, a five-yard toss to Josh Hill that put New Orleans up 26-0.

Brees then threw another pass later in the second half of Monday’s game — his fourth of the night — to reach the 541-pass mark.

Brees can now add this achievement to his long list of accolades, which includes one Super Bowl victory, a Super Bowl MVP title, 12 Pro Bowls, NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Walter Payton Man of the Year, seven-time NFL passing yards leader and five-time league completion percentage leader — among dozens of others. How much more impressive can he get?

Brees has undoubtedly turned his season around completely. His 2019 campaign got off to a shaky start after he sustained a thumb injury that sidelined him for five games.

Now, he certainly appears on track to cementing his status as the greatest NFL quarterback of all time — or at least of his generation.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday that the league will consider the New England Patriots’ crew’s recent illegal video of the Cincinnati Bengals’ sidelines as part of its investigation into the six-time Super Bowl-winning franchise.

“Obviously, it’s under review,” Goodell said in a news conference during the NFL’s winter meetings in Texas. “We’re gonna be thorough and we’re gonna get all the facts and we’ll go from there.”

Dubbed “Spygate 2.0” by many, the latest scandal involving the Patriots centers on a camera crew (hired as a third-party contractor) that traveled to Cleveland on Sunday to film the Bengals’ sideline during the team’s 27-19 loss to the Browns as part of a documentary series on a scout. The Patriots reportedly earned permission by the Browns to attend the game and shoot moments from it — and were allegedly expected to report back to Bill Belichick with the footage — but did not receive approval by the Bengals. During Sunday’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium, a Bengals staffer quickly became suspicious after noticing an unknown cameraman — who was wearing a Boston Bruins jersey and who identified himself as a Robert Kraft employee — filming Cincinnati’s coaching staff on the sideline and proceeded to alert media relations and security.

The Patriots have been the subject of several controversies and accusations of cheating in recent years, from “Deflate-gate” — which involved the alleged deflation of balls by a locker room attendant during the AFC Championship Game between New England and Indianapolis after the 2014 season — and the first “Spygate” scandal. This videotaping controversy occurred during the 2007 season and revolved around the Pats’ illicit filming of New York Jets defensive coaches’ signals from an unauthorized location. The Patriots were fined $250,000 for that incident, while Belichick was fined $500,000 and the team was stripped of a first-round draft pick the following year.

“Of course, that’s a factor. I think the key things are the new information that we have. That information we obviously already have,” Goodell added on Wednesday about how the first “Spygate” scandal factors into the NFL’s probe into the Patriots. “But I think the issue is what information do we have from this incident.”

Will the dynasty that is the Kraft-Belichick–Tom Brady-led Patriots pay the consequences for their actions this time around or get away with cheating? Will the NFL’s investigation into the Patriots affect Goodell and Kraft’s longtime friendship? No matter what the final outcome is, there will undoubtedly be a lot of angry football fans.

Anthony Rendon and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim agreed to a major deal on Wednesday.

The free-agent third baseman — who just helped lead the Washington Nationals to their first-ever World Series title — signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels. According to ESPN, the pact includes a full no-trade clause and lacks an opt-out clause. Rendon, 29, is set to have a physical on Friday and will be introduced at the Angels’ ballpark on Saturday.

The Angels had reportedly targeted Rendon after former Houston Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole signed his own mega-deal with the New York Yankees on Tuesday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers and Texas Rangers also had their sights set on Rendon. The third baseman also reportedly turned down a huge deal from the Nationals, who offered him a seven-year, $200 million extension at the end of this season.

Rendon will now join an Angels lineup that includes Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, both of whom also inked major deals with the team. The Angels are the first MLB franchise to bring on three players with deals worth $200 million or more.

Rendon enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career this year with the Nationals, so much in fact that he was even momentarily considered a top contender for the National League MVP award. The third baseman led MLB in 2019 with a career-high 126 RBIs and appeared in his first-ever All-Star Game. Rendon also enjoyed career bests in home runs (34), slugging percentage (.598) and batting average (.319). He also hit homers in Games 6 and 7 of this year’s World Series and became just the fifth player in history to do so.

Should Clemson and Alabama face off again in this year’s game, it would mark the fourth time in five years that the two teams play each other in the CFP national title game. The Tigers and the Tide have been led by top quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa and also boast several other talented players.

The CFP championship game will come after all of the major college bowl contests, including the Rose Bowl, the Peach Bowl, the Chick-Fil-A Bowl and the Citrus Bowl.

Eli Manning earned a big title on Monday night in his return to the New York Giants, but it wasn’t enough, as the team fell to the Eagles 23-17 in overtime in Philadelphia.

Manning threw two touchdown passes to rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton to pass Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethilsberger for seventh on the NFL’s all-time list. The veteran Giants signal-caller passed Roethlisberger after logging his 363rd and 364th career TD passes in the first half.

Despite the two-touchdown lead the Giants held at the half, Carson Wentz helped propel the Eagles to the come-from-behind victory, which Philadelphia secured with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Wentz to Zach Ertz with 5:10 left in overtime. This followed Wentz’ 5-yard throw to Ertz that tied it up at 17 just after the two-minute warning in regulation. Wentz finished with 325 passing yards and two touchdowns.

The heavily struggling Giants (2-11) had been hoping Manning — who finished 15-of-30 for 203 yards on Monday — would help rescue them after rookie QB Daniel Jones was ruled out last week with an ankle sprain. However, the Eagles are now 6-7 and one step closer to securing a playoff spot. Philadelphia holds the same record as the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys.

Giants fans will surely be upset if this turned out to be Manning’s last game. One would have hoped for a better sendoff for the two-time Super Bowl MVP and Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award winner but alas, it seems like Manning’s time with the G-Men is over.

The San Francisco 49ers announced this week the suspension of radio announcer Tim Ryan for an offensive comment he made about Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson‘s dark skin tone. Ryan will not work the Niner’s road game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Ryan made the remark in his weekly appearance on KNBR radio station’s Murph and Mac morning show. He was explaining his take on Jackson’s skill in faking handoffs in the Ravens‘ victory over the 49ers last weekend and appeared to suggest the black Baltimore QB — who is believed to be a serious MVP award contender — had an advantage on the field because his skin color is so dark.

“He’s really good at that fake, Lamar Jackson, but when you consider his dark skin color with a dark football with a dark uniform, you could not see that thing,” said Ryan, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I mean you literally could not see when he was in and out of the mesh point and if you’re a half step slow on him in terms of your vision forget about it, he’s out of the gate.”

Ryan, who was been the 49ers’ radio color analyst since 2014, later apologized to the team in a statement:

“I regret my choice of words in trying to describe the conditions of the game,” said Ryan. “Lamar Jackson is an MVP-caliber player and I respect him greatly. I want to sincerely apologize to him and anyone else I offended.”

As far as most NFL fans were concerned up until recently, Eli Manning‘s time with the New York Giants seemed to be virtually over. However, it now appears the veteran quarterback could get to start for the G-Men’s matchup against the Eagles in Philadelphia on Monday night.

According to CBS Sports, Giants coach Pat Shurmur said two-time Super Bowl champion Manning — who will be 39 next month — is “very likely” to start for the team’s Week 14 game, given that rookie QB Daniel Jones has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

Following a difficult start to this season, Manning was benched and replaced with Jones, a first-round draft pick out of Duke who delivered impressive performances in his first few NFL games. However, the Giants (2-10) are last in the NFC East and are now out of playoff contention for the third straight year. Many of their players, including second-year running back Saquon Barkley, have struggled lately. New York will undoubtedly face a tough challenge against the Eagles (5-7), who are second in the division and are fighting for a postseason spot. At the start of the season, Shurmur and Giants President and CEO John Mara insisted Manning would continue to be the team’s starter. Mara even controversially said he hoped Jones would never have to see a single snap in 2019.

The 24-time water sports world champion — who has competed in sports like windsurfing, kitesurfing, hydrofoil surfing and stand-up paddling — spoke to uSports exclusively about his experiences, struggles and injuries and how they are portrayed in the Red Bull Films documentary The Longest Wave. Naish, 56, revealed one particularly horrific injury that proved to be a major setback for him, as it was his first one in 40 years of competing professionally and sidelined him for six months — the longest stretch he has ever gone without participating in any water sports. Naish shattered his pelvis during a kitesurfing photo-shoot.

The New York Giants have undoubtedly struggled this season, but they could still pull off a surprise.

The team is 2-8 and third in the NFC East. The Giants have sustained six straight losses and have only defeated two opponents this season: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Redskins. Several of the Giants’ offensive players — like Saquon Barkley and Rhett Ellison — have sustained injuries that have kept them sidelined for some time. On Thursday, head coach Pat Shurmur said Ellison will not be able to play in Sunday’s game against the Bears in Chicago. Evan Engram also missed practice on Thursday due to a foot injury.

The G-Men face some tough challenges ahead, as they will play the Green Bay Packers (8-2) and the Philadelphia Eagles (5-5) after the Bears. Therefore, they will have to hope for as many of their offensive players as possible to stay healthy in order to turn their campaign around.

Terrell Owens dissed Stephen A. Smith in quite a bold way on Thursday.

The Hall of Famer appeared as a guest on ESPN’s First Take and was explaining his support for Colin Kaepernick‘s decision to change the location of his workout on Saturday. Owens also backed the ostracized free-agent quarterback for demanding “transparency” from the NFL, which blackballed him nearly three years ago.

Smith has repeatedly criticized Kaepernick, including for his decision to abstain from voting during the 2016 election, despite kneeling for the national anthem that year to protest racial inequality. Owens noted that Smith’s co-host Max Kellerman has defended Kaepernick significantly more than Smith has, and went on to say he believed Kellerman appeared to be the “blacker” of the two hosts.

“I’m in the streets, Max almost seems blacker than you Stephen A,” Owens told Smith. The First Take anchor quickly told Owens how offended he was by the comment.

“You done crossed the line,” Smith responded to Owens before accusing the former wide receiver of trying to “bait” him before the black community. Smith also blasted Owens on Twitter, and noted that the Hall of Famer requested to come on the show to discuss Kaepernick.

Yasmani Grandal is now officially a member of the Chicago White Sox.

The 31-year-old free-agent catcher signed a four-year, $73 million deal with the White Sox on Thursday, the biggest contract in the franchise’s history. According to ESPN, Grandal is expected to earn $18.25 million per season through 2023.

White Sox vice president Kent Williams explained in comments to reporters that signing Grandal was part of the team’s long-term strategy and had been planned “going back five years ago.” Williams also called the two-time All-Star a “quality guy.”

Last offseason, Grandal reportedly rejected a four-year offer from the New York Mets that would have paid him $60 million. Now, it’s clear his decision was a sound one.

Grandal is coming off what is undoubtedly the best season of his career with the Milwaukee Brewers. The team on Wednesday released the 36-year-old All-Star center fielder, who still has $26 million remaining on his seven-year, $153 million deal. The Yankees also released oft-injured first baseman Greg Bird this week.

Ellsbury, who was often injured throughout his career, last played in 2017 and spent four seasons with the Bronx Bombers. According to ESPN, the Yankees cut the outfielder to clear a spot on their 40-man roster, since the team added seven players to shield themselves against the upcoming Rule 5 draft. Ellsbury is till owed roughly $21 million for next season — in addition to a $5 million buyout of a club option for 2021 — per ESPN.

Ellsbury enjoyed a strong first season with New York in 2014, when he finished 271/.328/.419 with 16 homers and 39 stolen bases. However, he struggled after that and sustained multiple injuries, including an oblique muscle in his right side, back problems and hip issues.  Ellsbury had much greater success in his first seven MLB seasons, which he spent with the Boston Red Sox. The outfielder logged a .297 career average, 65 homers, 314 RBIs and 241 stolen bases during his time in Boston, where he also earned several accolades and helped lead the Red Sox to two World Series titles. In 2011 alone, Ellsbury won a Gold Glove Award, a Silver Slugger Award and was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year.
