Chase Briscoe won Sunday’s Bank of America 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, beating Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell by 0.029 seconds in one of the closest finishes in the track’s history.

It was the second-closest finish ever at Charlotte and the closest NASCAR Cup Series finish of the 2026 season. The victory was Briscoe’s second in a row, following his win at Las Vegas the week before, and his third of the year.

Briscoe looked in control after his pit crew put him in the lead on the final stop of the afternoon, and he built a more than two-second advantage. But his car’s handling faded in lapped traffic, and Bell closed the gap over the final laps.

On the last lap, Bell dove to the inside of Briscoe through the final corner, and the two cars made contact coming out of Turn 4. Both slid sideways as the drivers fought to keep control, then drag-raced to the checkered flag. Bell got loose in the scramble, giving Briscoe just enough room to hold on.

Ryan Blaney finished third and Josh Berry fourth.

The race was the Cup Series’ first fall event on Charlotte’s 1.5-mile oval since 2017, after several years on the track’s road course layout. All three of Briscoe’s 2026 wins have come on 1.5-mile tracks.

Wallace, Bowman walk away from hard hit

The day’s most frightening moment came on lap 77, when Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman and William Byron were involved in a violent crash.

Bowman tried to pass Wallace for fifth when his car snapped around. He overcorrected up the track and slammed into Wallace’s No. 23 Toyota.

All the drivers climbed out on their own, though it took Wallace a couple of minutes to exit his car. Officials evaluated and released Wallace and Bowman from the infield care center.

Bowman took the blame afterward. “I overcorrected,” he said, adding bluntly that he had done a poor job.

More trouble followed the checkered flag when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Michael McDowell got into a scuffle on track. The cause of the dispute was unclear at first.

Championship picture tightens

Points leader Kyle Larson finished sixth, his worst result of the 10-race Chase so far. He still extended his lead to 49 points over Denny Hamlin.

Bell sits third, 51 points back, while Briscoe’s back-to-back wins have moved him to within 65 points of Larson.

Larson has dominated the Chase, finishing no worse than sixth and winning twice.

Four races remain in the season, at Phoenix, Talladega, Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.

Sunday’s finish was a welcome burst of drama for a postseason that has produced few close finishes. According to OutKick, it was the tightest finish at Charlotte since Jimmie Johnson edged Bobby Labonte in the 2005 Coca-Cola 600.

James Madison is leaving the Sun Belt Conference for the American Conference, the university announced Monday, making it the latest school to change leagues in college sports’ ongoing wave of conference realignment.

JMU’s Board of Visitors voted Monday unanimously to authorize the university to notify the Sun Belt that it is leaving. The Dukes will become full members of the American no later than July 1, 2028. Student reporter Libby Mercer first reported the board’s vote before the school confirmed it.

“The American Conference is the right home for James Madison University,” the school said in a statement, citing academic, competitive and geographic reasons.

University president James Schmidt said the school was “honored that our request for membership in the American Conference has been accepted.” He also thanked the Sun Belt and its member schools for the championships and relationships JMU built during its time in the league.

The Dukes will compete in the American in 17 of the school’s 18 sports. Field hockey will remain in the Mid-American Conference.

The move comes with a significant price tag. JMU will pay nearly $23 million to join the American and a $5 million exit fee to the Sun Belt.

JMU will receive a full share of the American’s media rights revenue right away. New members often receive only a partial share during their first few years in a conference.

Money also appears to have driven the timing. The Sun Belt had planned to vote this week on raising its exit fee above the $5 million that Texas State paid when it left the league for the Pac-12.

The Sun Belt responded with a statement saying its leadership will evaluate all of its options and continue working to ensure the conference’s rise as “the premier FBS non-autonomy conference in the country.”

JMU’s addition gives the American 14 football-playing members. Sources said the conference is not planning to add another school in the near future.

The Dukes have risen quickly since leaving the FCS’s Colonial Athletic Association to join the Sun Belt in 2022. Under coach Curt Cignetti, JMU went 19-4 over its first two FBS seasons. Cignetti then left for Indiana, where he led the Hoosiers to their first national championship.

Under coach Bob Chesney, the Dukes won their first Sun Belt title last season, finished 12-2, and reached the College Football Playoff. They have not lost a conference game since a double-overtime defeat to Marshall in November 2024.

This season, JMU is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Sun Belt play under first-year head coach Billy Napier.

The American offers JMU a higher national profile and a more regional footprint. The Harrisonburg, Virginia, school will be within driving distance of several future conference opponents, including Army, Navy, Temple, East Carolina and Charlotte.

JMU will continue competing in the Sun Belt until its move to the American becomes official.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels took responsibility after a chaotic final overtime sequence cost his team a chance to kick a game-winning field goal against the New York Giants on Sunday.

The botched ending overshadowed an otherwise strong return for Daniels, who had missed two games after dislocating his left, non-throwing elbow in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys. The injury stunned his teammates at the time.

“Ultimately, it’s on me,” Daniels said after the game ended in the NFL’s first 27-27 tie of the season.

Washington had the Giants on the ropes late in overtime. Commanders defensive lineman Daron Payne forced Giants running back Cam Skattebo to fumble at Washington’s 23-yard line, and Daniels led a 53-yard drive to the Giants’ 24. He completed three passes for 35 yards and added a 16-yard scramble.

With no timeouts left, Daniels took the snap with 12 seconds remaining on a quick sideline throw to tight end Ben Sinnott. Instead, Daniels rolled left, turned back inside and was tackled for no gain with eight seconds to go.

The Commanders scrambled to line up for a spike but could not get another snap off before the clock ran out. Kicker Drew Stevens never got onto the field.

Daniels said the offense needed to stop the clock and understand the situation, adding that everyone, from the top down, shared responsibility. “We just got to be better at situational football,” he said.

Head coach Dan Quinn also took the blame. He said the team was still trying to gain extra yards for the kick after the previous play, and that the right call would have been to spike the ball earlier instead of putting Daniels in that position.

“Leaving tonight with a tie feels like a loss,” Quinn said. “That is my responsibility, nobody else’s.”

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who wasn’t on the field for the final play, said the offense didn’t execute or communicate the call correctly.

The Giants noticed the disarray. Defensive lineman Shelby Harris said, “It seemed like a bunch of confusion on the play from their part,” and added that Washington was slow getting to the line.

For Skattebo, the ending came as a relief after his fumble gave Washington the opportunity.

The frustration also reached the team’s ownership. Commanders part-owner Magic Johnson wrote on social media that he was “in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management” in overtime.

Wearing a brace on his left arm, Daniels totaled 302 yards and two touchdowns, both on long runs. He broke a 38-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and later added a 26-yard scoring run.

The tie leaves Washington at 1-3-1. The Giants are 3-1-1 and remain atop the NFC East.

The Commanders will visit the San Francisco 49ers next Monday night.

The New York Yankees fan whose reach over the outfield wall negated a game-tying home run in the team’s season-ending playoff loss will face no punishment beyond his ejection.

The Yankees’ early exit has put Boone’s job security in question, while the Rays advanced to face the Cleveland Guardians in the ALCS.

Security removed the fan from Yankee Stadium during Wednesday night’s 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the American League Division Series. According to Kuty, he will not be banned or otherwise disciplined.

A source told The Athletic that the fan’s actions “didn’t rise nearly to the level” of the conduct that got two other Yankees fans banned from all MLB ballparks after the 2024 World Series.

The play came in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Yankees trailed 4-2, with George Lombard Jr. on first base, when Anthony Volpe drove a fly ball deep to left field. Rays left fielder Victor Mesa Jr. leaped at the wall, and the ball disappeared into the seats. It was initially ruled a game-tying two-run homer.

Replay showed a fan in the front row of the bleachers reaching over the wall and catching the ball. MLB’s Replay Operations Center ruled that the ball “would not have left the playing field, nor would it have been caught.” Volpe’s homer became an RBI double, leaving the Yankees down a run.

Video posted on social media showed the fan celebrating the apparent tie with friends before security escorted him out of the stadium. Some fans threw debris onto the field after the call was reversed.

Tampa Bay held on to win and complete a three-game sweep, ending New York’s season and extending its championship drought to 17 years. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he agreed with the ruling. “I thought they got it right,” he said.

“It was interference,” Mesa said in Spanish.

The fan has not been publicly identified.

The decision not to punish him further contrasts sharply with the response to fan interference at Yankee Stadium two years ago. In Game 4 of the 2024 World Series, fans Austin Capobianco and John P. Football fans turned Lambeau Field into a sea of sweater vests, sunglasses and mustaches on Sunday, paying tribute to Chicago Bears legend Mike Ditka just two days after the Hall of Famer died at 86.

Ditka’s family announced his death on Oct. 9. In a statement, they noted that while the world knew him as a Hall of Fame player and the coach who led the Bears to a Super Bowl title, “we knew him as the heart of our family.” No cause of death was announced.

Tommy Pham‘s return to the Chicago White Sox active roster began with a chance elevator encounter and ended with a go-ahead home run just hours later.
