A’s Outfielder Denzel Clarke Makes Another Spectacular Catch

The Athletics rookie centerfielder Denzel Clarke is building a reputation as a player who makes spectacular catches. He’s even earned the nickname “Spiderman” for his antics.

Nolan Schanuel hit a projected 398-foot drive in the first inning, only for Clarke to make a wild catch by climbing the wall in left-center field at Angel Stadium.

“I always say the first play in my first time playing a new ballpark is going to break the ice,” Clarke said. “Crazy play to break the ice.”

Despite the A’s 7-4 loss to the Angels, Clarke’s robbery has made waves among baseball fans, as the rookie is building up a name for himself through making spectacular robberies.

A few weeks ago, against the Toronto Blue Jays, Clarke scaled the wall at Rogers Centre to make another incredible catch, taking a home run away from Alejandro Kirk.

“I’ve played with Denzel for a few years now, dating back to the Minor Leagues,” A’s pitcher Grant Holman said. “I’ve seen him do stuff out there that you just don’t see. Schanuel hit that ball, and I’m thinking, ‘All right, with Denzel, he’s got a chance to catch anything.’”

Schanuel admitted he thought he had his fourth home run of the season.

Each of the past two weeks, Clarke has won the Electric Play of the Week Award. He ran full speed to make an incredible catch at Sutter Health Park last week.

As it stands, Clarke’s catch against the Angels is the catch of the year.
