Armenian Weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan Injures His Arm During Second Lift

Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan had his Olympic dreams dashed during a clean and jerk of 195 kilograms or 430 pounds. The 20-year-old was the 77kg weight class European champion and the favorite to win the event in Rio.

It appeared as though his left elbow hyperextended and dislocated during his second attempt at lifting the 195 kg. At first medical staff thought it might have been a dislocated shoulder.

His horrible injury below, disclaimer: If you’re squeamish don’t watch it.

He was helped off the stage by his coaching and medical staff. Medical staff attended to Karapetyan and he was taken to the hospital on a stretcher and given and IV.

Kazakhstan’s Nijat Rahimov won and broke the clean and jerk world record for the 77 kg weight class, lifting 214 kilograms. Rahimov held off the 2012 London Olympics champion Lyu Xiaojun from China. Egypt’s Mohamed Mahmoud took the bronze.
