Andy Murray Victory Gives Britain Its First Davis Cup In 79 Years

For eight decades, the Britain men’s national tennis team has endured defeat in the Davis Cup tournament while other countries have raised the trophy to be crowned world champions. Yesterday, the drought was ended for Britain thanks to star tennis player Andy Murray.

Murray beat Belgium’s David Goffin yesterday in a 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 match, thus bringing Great Britain to a 3-1 victory over Belgium. Murray finished the match with a backhand lob that sealed the win and his British teammates piling on top of him soon after. Murray won all three team points for Britain over the weekend and thus a finals match was not needed to be played. “I can’t believe we did it,” Murray said on court. “We may never get an opportunity to do this again. We should celebrate tonight.” This is Britain’s first Davis Cup win in 79 years, their last victory in 1936.

With this victory, it makes the 10th Davis Cup Britain has won since 1900, making them third on the all-time wins list behind the United States and Australia with 32 and 28, respectively. “Nice point to finish off, you just can’t believe you’ve won a major competition. It’s probably the most emotional I’ve been at the end of a match,” Murray said. “Nothing may ever top this, it’s definitely one of the highlights of all of our careers.”
