Al Michaels Apologizes After Comparing Giants To Harvey Weinstein

Al Michaels seems to have exaggerated while making a joke on Sunday night’s football broadcast.

Al Michaels Harvey Weinstein Joke News

During the third quarter of the New York Giants’ game against the Denver Broncos at Sports Authority Field, the NBC announcer quipped, “Let’s face it, the Giants are coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein, and they’re up by 14 points.”

Cris Collinsworth, Michaels’ partner on the broadcast, simply laughed at the phrase and said, “Only my L.A. guy comes up with that one.”

“All you have to do is read the papers — any paper,” Michaels replies.

Weinstein, a notable Hollywood producer who founded Miramax as well as The Weinstein Company alongside his brother Bob, was revealed to have sexually harassed or assaulted dozens of actresses and other women in the film industry. Following all the women’s accusations, Weinstein’s credit as producer was removed from several of his company’s upcoming projects, and he was ousted from the Motion Picture Academy on Saturday.

The Giants, (1-5) meanwhile, defeated the Broncos 23-10 on Sunday for their first victory of the season. Ben McAdoo’s squad is coming off a crushing week after suffering a home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5, which also saw them lose several key players to season-ending ankle injuries: wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall and Dwayne Harris. Sterling Shepard and Landon Collins were also injured, although Collins played on Sunday. To top it all off, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was suspended after getting into an argument with McAddo following the defeat to the Chargers, although it was later revealed the suspension would only last one week.

Later in the broadcast, Michaels stated he was “a little flippant about somebody obviously very much in the news all over the country. It was not meant in that manner. So my apologies, and we’ll just leave it at that.”

NBC Sports did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Monday.

The Giants next host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Jets, (3-3) lost to the New England Patriots (4-2) 24-17 Sunday after having a controversial touchdown taken away in the fourth quarter. Following a video review, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins was ruled to have fumbled the ball on his four-yard reception in the end zone. Malcolm Butler and Duron Harmon knocked the ball out of Sefarian-Jenkins’ hands to give the Patriots a touchback at the 20-yard line.

“I don’t think it does anything for me to come up here and blast the official, blast the rule or anything like that — the rule is a rule,” Seferian-Jenkins said.

Nevertheless, he still felt as if he had scored, and so did many of his teammates.

“I’m pretty sure everybody’s going to look back and say that was a B.S. call,” receiver Jermaine Kearse said.

Even some of the Patriots seemed to agree.

The Jets next visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
