After Trent Williams Gets $50 Million In Contract Extension, What Does It Mean For San Francisco 49ers?

Trent Williams has signed a two-year, $50 million contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams’s previous contract did not give him any guaranteed money in the 2026 season. This new contract will guarantee him $32 million for the 2026 season and $5 million for 2027.

The Washington Redskins drafted him with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. By 2012, he was already a Pro Bowl-level player. In 2015, he signed a rookie extension with the Redskins. His contract was a five-year, $68 million extension.

His relationship with the Redskins became rocky after 2019. In 2013, the Redskins discovered a growth on his head, but it was considered to be harmless. However, in 2019, it was discovered that the growth was a rare form of soft-tissue cancer. Williams underwent cancer treatment right after receiving his diagnosis. He attempted to return in late October, but experienced pain and discomfort.

In March 2020, his agent was given permission by the Redskins to search for a trade partner. The 49ers gave up a 2020 fifth-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick to get Williams. He reunited with Kyle Shanahan, who was the offensive coordinator with the Redskins before.

Williams has made the Pro Bowl in five of his six seasons with the 49ers. The only season he didn’t make it was 2024, when he played just 10 games. Last season, he was a second-team All-Pro.

The best season of his career is widely considered to be 2023. He had a career-high 17 Approximate Value. He was a key part in the 49ers finishing with the No. 1 seed in the NFC and making the Super Bowl.

Williams will be 38 years old next season. Despite this, he’s shown minimal signs of declining. His veteran leadership is vital for the 49ers.
