The shooting began at around 11 am local time, after police received a call about a hit-and-run. Marathon officials stated that the race was stopped for approximately 10 minutes and rerouted. Several additional streets were closed off as local authorities began pursuing the woman.

The 26.2-mile San Diego Marathon includes a half-marathon and 5K run.

San Diego police Chief David Nisleit said his department was also looking into Williams’ potential connection to a kidnapping that happened in the nearby town of Chula Vista, California.

The Boston Marathon in April 2013 was the site of terror attacks after two brothers set off bombs near the finish line. Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured in the bombings.
