The New York Yankees had recently overcome their early-season slump to win eight straight games, but that streak ended Thursday night with a 5-4 home loss to the Boston Red Sox.
The Bombers (26-11) now hold the same record as the Red Sox to tie for first in the AL East after J.D. Martinez scored the game-winning go-ahead solo shot in the eighth off Dellin Betances. Martinez smacked a fly-ball over the small right-field wall.
In the seventh inning, the Yankees rallied from being down 4-0 with four runs, most of which came against Joe Kelly — a pitcher who has had a particularly bitter relationship with the Yankees since he got into a fight with Tyler Austin earlier this season and the pair were suspended for it.
Nevertheless, the Yankees won two of the three games in the series against Boston. Thursday’s game at Yankee Stadium was delayed nearly an hour due to rain in the fifth.

According to the New York Post, Aaron Judge said he was at fault for not being able to catch Martinez’s big hit in the eighth.
“I ran into him [a fan] but once it gets past that [imaginary] line it’s fair game,’’ Judge told the Post. “If I had gotten a better read, that is what it came down to. I just missed it.’’
In their first encounter since that April 11 fight in Boston that ignited a benches-clearing brawl, Austin hit a pitch from Kelly to left-field for the first out of the eighth.
CC Sabathia allowed four runs on nine hits in over four innings of work. The Yankees ace seemed to voice his frustration over the strike zone to Stu Scheurwater, the home plate umpire, in the fourth.
In five scoreless innings for Boston, Eduardo Rodriguez allowed only one hit.
On Wednesday, Red Sox pitcher David Price was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. The 32-year-old ace said he has experience numbness and swelling in his left (throwing) hand. Price has not played since May 3, although he is set to return Saturday for a game in Toronto.
Price denied rumors on Thursday that his carpal tunnel syndrome is due to playing excessive video games like the popular battle/survival game Fortnite. However, Price added that he would stop playing Fortnite to avoid further distractions.
