50 Most-Infamous Athlete Mugshots: Tennis Star Jennifer Capriati Marijuana Possession In ’94

On May 16, 1994, former tennis star Jennifer Capriati was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for marijuana possession.

Capriati was at the Gables Inn Motel in Coral Gables, Florida, when police entered her room after receiving information that a 17-year-old runaway was in her room. Capriati was the only person in her room at the time of the search, but officers found under 20 grams of marijuana in her backpack.

Instead of entering a traditional plea deal, Capriati agreed to enroll in a drug counseling and rehabilitation program. Capriati completed the program, which led to the misdemeanor charge being dropped from her record.

Capriati was known as a tennis phenom. She turned professional at 13 and won a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics at 16.

She won three major singles titles during her career. She won the Australian Open in 2001 and 2002, and she won the French Open in 2001.

Capriati retired after the 2004 season due to right shoulder and back injuries. In 2012, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
