49ers QB C.J. Beathard Mourns Loss Of Brother, 49ers Win Against Rams Something Special

A game-winning field goal in San Francisco by kicker Robbie Gould gave the 49ers (12-3) a huge victory over the Rams (8-7). But even bigger was the story of heart break and loss for 49ers backup quarterback C.J. Beathard.

The Beathard family lost C.J.’s brother, Clayton Beathard, this weekend after he was fatally stabbed outside a bar in Nashville. Home with his family, Beathard had one request of his coach and team: to win the game.

And that they did. Although 49ers quarterback Jimmy  Garoppolo was not perfect, he led the team to victory on a game-winning drive, setting Gould up for field goal. Moving forward, a possible return of linebacker Kwon Alexander will bring the 49ers defense back to full strength.

San Francisco has had six games decided in the final minute out of their last seven. For playoff runs, this will prove quite helpful, as close game practice never hurts.

As for the Rams, their playoff chances ended with this tough loss.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan had nothing but kind things to say after the game. “Also, I didn’t know what to say to you guys at the beginning of the day, because you guys know what happened last night. Having to go spend an hour with C.J. last night and just being with him during that, you guys know how tough it is for him and his family right now…(Beathard’s) got our backs, just like we have his. It was a special day for you guys, and I’m so glad you guys could do that for him.”

In a statement released by the team, the 49ers said, “The 49ers family was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragedy involving C.J. Beathard’s younger brother, Clayton. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to C.J. and the entire Beathard family as they cope with the unthinkable loss of a loved one. C.J. has traveled home to join his family knowing he has the support of our entire organization as they grieve the passing of Clayton.”
