Opening day of Major League Baseball is just around the corner. That means it is time to take a look at each team’s prognosis heading into the 2021 season after the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign.
The New York Mets made some significant deals during the offseason and have their eyes on a World Series title after missing the postseason each of the last four seasons. New York pulled off a major blockbuster move to acquire perhaps the best shortstop in baseball in Francisco Lindor. In that same trade, they were also able to get SP Carlos Carrasco, who should serve as the Mets’ second starter, behind ace Jacob deGrom.
The National League East is a very competitive division, but New York is thinking World Series or bust in what should be a very productive season for the Metropolitans.

The Mets have enough firepower to be a real powerhouse in the National League this coming season. The team was better than league-average offensively last season, and has only improved the starting roster. The addition of Lindor should force pitchers to give sluggers Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto pitches to hit. Plus, the team upgraded at the catcher position from Wilson Ramos to James McCann. New York’s starting lineup doesn’t have any major weaknesses. All players expected to start can swing the bat well, and the middle of the lineup has major home run power. Expect a lot of runs out of this young core of hitters.
On the pitching side, deGrom is one of the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball. Adding Carrasco, Taijuan Walker, and Joey Lucchesi to the pitching staff should provide a boost to the team’s ERA. Despite deGrom’s dominance last season, the Mets still managed just a 4.98 ERA in the pandemic-shortened season. The team should fare much better in 2021, especially if closer Edwin Diaz can return to previous form and become an elite closer option once again.
Overall, it is a very exciting time to be a New York Mets fan. This team could go very far in 2021.
