2020 NBA All-Star Weekend Recap: Heat’s Derrick Jones Jr. Wins Slam Dunk Contest

The NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago has seen exciting action so far. Friday night saw the Celebrity Game and the Rising Stars Challenge, while Saturday night had the Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest, and Slam Dunk Contest. The All-Star Game takes place on Sunday.

Slam Dunk Contest: Derrick Jones Jr., Miami Heat

An exciting dunk contest ended with controversy as Derrick Jones Jr. of the Miami Heat walked away with the victory.

Dwight Howard and Pat Connaughton had some great moments early on, but Jones and Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic seemed to steal the show.

The two were tied at the end of the final round, sending the contest to a tiebreaker round, where they remained tied. With one last dunk each, Gordon jumped over the 7-foot 5-inch Tacko Fall and only managed to score a 47. Jones came out victorious, but not without stars and fans taking to twitter to voice their disappointment.

 

3-Point Contest: Buddy Hield, Sacramento Kings

The 3-point contest was exciting with Devin Booker and Buddy Hield left to fight for the crown. Booker posted a score of 26, which seemed to have the contest in his grasp. But with Hield making four of his five money rack shots, his was able to squeeze out a score of 27, edging Booker out by one for the crown.

Skill Challenge: Bam Adebayo, Miami Heat

As the first Heat player to win since Dwayne Wade, Adebayo brings the title back to Miami. As always, the challenge puts guards up against big men. Adebayo faced Domantas Sabonis in the finals and edged him out, making three of the past five winners big men.

The Rising Stars Game saw Team USA defeat Team World 151-131. Miles Bridges came away the MVP with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The always entertaining Celebrity Game saw Team Wilbon defeat Team Smith by a final of 62-47. Common took home the MVP with 10 points and five rebounds.

The NBA All-Star Game will see Team LeBron take on Team Giannis Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on TNT.
